Caroline Jariwala
'My main influence is from my mother, from the stories she tells me of life in India -- of the festivals and customs which are celebrated. The paintings convey a positive aspect of life.'
....So states Caroline Jariwala, current 'Artist in Residence', at the City Museum & Art Gallery (Bethesda St., Hanley).
To be more specific, they are "a response to her exploration of her family's Gujarati heritage", and came about following a visit to India in 1986. An inspiring place no doubt, but Caroline returned not to paint pictures of breath-taking Indian landscapes, but scenes from her family background -- in particular her female relatives.
Filled with bright vibrant colours, and distinctly Indian patterns, they certainly make a change from the often dull depressing hues of many modern paintings (apparently influenced by Gujariti folk art) they also perfectly reflect the bright vibrant nature of the artist herself.
Those who'd like to see for themselves can see Caroline's work at the City Museum right upto Sunday 8th March (2pm-5pm, 10am-5pm other days). And, of course, can go along to the Willfield-Queensberry Centre on 8th March and enjoy the slideshow being given by the artist.
