So she traveled to an enormous volcano, and climbed into it where it was
a mighty fire, and called out to the fire "Please! Come talk with me!
I want to be your friend!"

And there was a great crackling and glowing, and the fire
roared, in a voice like the bellow of a great furnace, "Why do you
want to be friends with me, little Silver?"

"Because I am lonely, and in need of a friend. And I thought,
I shall make friends with the Fire, for through the Sun, the Fire
touches everywhere and everybody. And then I would never be alone. "
replied Silver, speaking loudly to be heard over the roaring. She
didn't mention that she was already friends with Air and Water.

"And why should I be friends with you? " crackled the Fire.

"I thought you were probably lonely too. You spend all your
time high up in the sky as the Sun, or deep inside mountains like this
one, dark and lonely places. And you are so hot and bright, most
people would be too dazzled or scared for you to be able to make a
friend."

The Fire stopped roaring and crackling, and just glowed
softly. Silver used this time to catch her breath, and wipe her
forehead, for she had gotten quite warm during all the roaring and
crackling.

Finally, there came an answer, in a voice like a log being
thrown on a fire, which said "Yes, I have been feeling lonely and I do
need a friend. Let us be friends, little Silver."

So the two became friends. It was hard at first, with Fire's
heat and light leaving Silver feeling dizzy and faint, and with Silver
always afraid that the fire would burn her up. But eventually, Silver
learned to endure the heat, and was not afraid that it would consume
her.

After a while, Silver became tired of the heat and the light,
and decided it was time to make friends with Earth.
