The Bond
late one cold rainy night
in a chat room in cyberspace
few souls were there
fewer still would come
it seemed to be like any other night
soon i would be offline
another day spent exploring a new world
the last tendrils of discovery still fresh in my mind
and i was just sitting here
as new arrivals came
introductions were made
and it seems like all of oregon had made this place home
the image shifted in my mind
to the top of the roof of a building
perched precariously so we sat and chatted
the topic was serious
abuse survivors
and the new arrivals seemed as battered as before
but something was definitely different
i had never had an experience where i felt myself outside my home
perched as i was on a rooftop in a city i'd never seen
and one name seemed to make that world all that more real
crow
she was a newcomer
someone who i had perhaps noticed
perhaps not
in the week or so before she stood out from the rest
that rainy night she was flooded in
had plans and no way to bring them to life
knew pain and was expressing it as best she could
and i felt something
a need to reach out
stronger with her for whatever reason there might be
i was engaged though things were not going well
and her own life seemed a million miles removed from mine
but there was a common thread
violence directed towards us
that made a bond tight and strong
her flooded in
me lost in dreams
together we understood a darkness few know
weeks later i would encounter her again
as twobears
yet another senseless act of violence had happened to her
and i remember those early nights
when we all took turns watching her
getting to know her
learning more about her world
finding out she was a medacine woman
finding her open to us as we were to her
and how she came through this crisis
to stand tall and proud
i call her pam now
my wife
and she calls me alice
her wife
through thick and thin we have been there for one another
through good and bad times we have been together
thus is our bond
