'Close Encounters Of The BONE Kind' : Written By Koen Wouda

My first encounter with Bone was in a comic shop in Arnhem, Holland. (Bone is sold in almost every "American-comic-importing" comic shop here. It's strange, though... I get the feeling that if you read Bone here in Holland, that you become hardcore at once!)

I saw this comic. The 3 Bone cousins at the cover of Bone#1 attracted me. A little voice inside my head said:
"OPEN IT, YOU MORON!!! YOU DON'T WANT TO MISS THIS COMIC!!!" I flipped the pages and saw cool art and nice humor. I instantly fell in love with the magnificent art. As I flipped the pages, I discovered that this was a comic sold in separate issues.  It almost kept me from collecting it. Usually, I read comics you can buy almost anywhere. I was some kind of afraid that I would never get this series complete.  I bought the comic anyway...just trying it out...

After I had read issue #1 I said "thank you" to the little voice in my head...for Bone was indeed a comic, I HAD to read! So I went back to the store a few days after and bought Bone 2,3 and 4. Then...after issue 4 I discovered Bone wasn't just a comic with good humor and beautiful art... The comic began to develop a larger storyline! I became more interested and it was a few weeks after my first encounter that I decided to go to the comic shop...and buy ALL BONE-comics available!

Right now, I am a proud owner of Bone #1 - #33 and I even managed to get Bone 13 1/2 and the Bone Source Book. I am still amazed by  the fact that every issue of Bone makes me more addicted! AND MORE AND MORE INPATIENT! (On the other hand... I can see that this 2 months is needed to make a comic of this quality).

Bone is some kind of drug:

  • After trying it for only once, you become addicted
  • Just like a drug, Bone's an escape out of reality
  • After a while, you want more... and then more... and then more, more!!!
  • Then you start to collect all things related to the drug: merchandise
  • If your dealer (comic shops) STILL didn't get the newest issue...you'd almost like to strangle him! (or her)
And then you surf the net in order to look for other people with the same addiction.... And you'll find that there is NO cure! *sniff*
