The Heroes convention that was held in Charlotte,
South Carolina was a great event! Here's some information that I've complied
about the event. If you have some questions that you would like answered,
then e-mail me at, bonefan@bitsmart.com.
If you attended the convention, then e-mail me, and I'll post your story.
As
I entered the convention center, a row of booths lined up for ticket sales.
I attended the convention on Saturday, July 4th-- so that is why the date
is printed on the pass. The only other kind of pass that you could have
purchased was the 3 day pass.
The convention itself
was decorated with row after row of comics, videos, posters, and anything
that had to deal with comics (ANYTHING!). However, one thing that stood
out from everything else was the centerpiece. A huge tree surrounded by
the Trilogy Tour II. And there among the other artists was the bone "booth"
where the prototypes for all the Bone figures where in a plastic case.
Other items for sale included posters, trades, comics, the postcard booklet,
phoney balloon, and just about anything that you could think of that dealt
with Bone.
Jeff Smith was planned
to arrive at 3:00 pm, and leave at 5 pm that day. I was more then prepared
with my camera and comics in hand. Some people brought their whole collection
(which took up a lot of time for him to sign). But my guess is that they
were going to sell them. Other then signing, Jeff would also draw sketches
for anyone who asked ( I took advantage of that...). While
waiting, I heard one person behind me say, "If I don't get my comics signed,
and he tries to leave at 5, then I'm gone go up to him and *chuckle* say,
'I'm gonna kill you if you don't' That'll make them stay." So although
there were some comic fans, some had other intentions on mind. After 2
hours of waiting, I approached Jeff Smith. I shook his hand and carried
out a short conversation. Then, I asked to have my picture taken with him,
and he was more then happy. After the picture, he kept on signing my comics(
3 total) and
then drew a sketch of Smiley Bone (click on
image for larger size). In closing, I know
that Jeff Smith is a very decent guy. In fact, when I first went and shook
his hand, he said, "You look familiar. Have I met you before?" And, I had
never met him so I replied, "Not that I know of." I do wish to meet him
again, though. He's honest, and very kind. He was very nice to talk to,
and also had quite a sense of humor. So, for everyone that met him, and
and will meet him, its worth the wait.
