but to win his friendship and understanding,
and thereby create a society in which all men will be able to live together as brothers."
GIVE US THE BALLOT - WE WILL TRANSFORM THE SOUTH
(May 17, 1957)
One man's dream was that of a whole people. Unlike the majority of men, his was not a selfish dream. His was a dream--a vision--of freedom and equality; a dream of solidity among all the peoples of a nation.
On Monday, January 17th, we honor this unselfish man in celebration of his birthday. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. dedicated his life to stamping out ignorance; to righting the wrong of racial division in America; to weaving the fabric of a peaceful co-existence of all the citizens of one nation; to giving US a dream.
In remembrance of his great sacrifice, Dr. King's birthday was made a legal US holiday. All this celebrating is good, but it is more important that we all know what his dream was. It is more important that we know why his dream was a sacrifice. It is more important that we insure his life was not given in vain.
US POTPOURRI will feature stories portraying the essence of Dr. King's dream, and many other great Americans, who contributed their lives to making the quality of life for the US better.
