Motion no. 6 - Beef Industry

"Conference is concerned about the crisis facing the agriculture industry at present regarding B.S.E. Conference notes that the beef industry is facing financial ruin unless the United Kingdom Government takes prompt action to have the backlog of cattle removed from farms. Conference further notes that the dairy side of farming is also in desperation because cull cows are still on the farms. Quota implications have made matters worse and Conference calls on the Government to resolve this additional problem which is not of the farmers’ making. Conference is of the view that relaxation of the Superlevy on the 1996/97 year is the best practical way to resolve this problem."

Motion no. 7 - Northern Ireland Forum
The Forum Party to move:

"This Conference welcomes the establishment of the Northern Ireland Forum and notes with satisfaction the participation of political parties representing the majority of voters in Northern Ireland. Conference is encouraged by the successful debates on vital bread and butter issues, such as housing, health, education and the B.S.E crisis and looks forward to receiving reports from its committees on a wide range of major policy issues. Conference calls upon Her Majesty’s Government to extend to the Forum a meaningful consultative role, so that through it, the people of Northern Ireland will have some influence on the policies of the Northern Ireland Office."
