Log cast: Reon, Haikari Log date: 8/13/99 Haikari is sitting in her room on the bed, trying to meditate and calm her frazzled nerves. She doesn't dare do so in the Chamber of the Egg, she doesn't wish to confront anyone else, just yet. A slender hand reaches in, pale as snow, but touched just enough by the sun to give some colour, pushing back the curtain that seperates the private chambers from the garden outside. A silvery sending announces the new presence seeking entrance quietly, carefully devoid of emotion. ** Haikari? ** The petname 'gazer' is gone, the only sign that something is wrong. Haikari looks up, her face going pallid at your entrance. She expects you to be angry, her foolishness got you hurt. ** Teacher, Reon...I'm sorry. ** her hands fidget restlessly in her lap, and she looks at you with tears starting in her blue eyes, helpless to her own emotions. That seems to be as good a reply as any, and Reon takes it as a cue to enter, the curtain falling back into place behind him with a faint rustle of fabric. ** It's a little late for that now, ** the Chosen replies brusquely, gazing at you from just inside the room, barely a pace away from the entryhole. ** Apologies can't change what happened. ** Haikari sighs, studying her cleanly shod feet, blue slippers, this time, delicate looking and certainly not meant for Outside. ** I...I know. ** she shrugs helplessly, not knowing what else to say to you. In the softest tone possible, Reon asks, ** Why did you do it, Haikari? ** Haikari can't meet your eyes. ** Because Malene... <> ** she shakes her head, unable to even /look/ at you now. ** She made me feel foolish. ** ** That's all? ** Apparently buying it, for all the uncertainties in your sending, Reon frowns, his lips pulling back briefly as his brows draw together. ** By Voll's crown of feathers, Haikari. I nearly got killed because you were /embarrassed/? ** Haikari flinches, her face flooding with guilt. ** She was right, Reon. I wish I knew another way to say it. I wish I didn't... < > ** Reon apparently doesn't seem to get it at first. The thought is so far from his mind, his thoughts so clouded by frustration, that he just doesn't get it. ** Who was right? Winnowill? The Wolfrider? ** He snorts derisively, shaking his head quickly before pulling his helmet off of his head, letting the colourless strands fall haphazardly over his face, though the majority of them are swept back again by the bun at the intersection between his skull and neck. Haikari draws her knees up under her chin, staring at you with stricken eyes. ** Malene was right! I /care/ about you. How can you care so little about what happens to you? I'm SORRY that you were hurt. But I was afraid to come back, to be near you. ** The silence comes like the shatter of a porcelain plate against the stone floor. It's ushered in by the metallic clang of the helmet slipping through Reon's fingers and striking the ground, the hand that pushes the colourless hair back from his eyes pausing in its movements, his eyes staring back at you as if you had struck him. Were he not already a pale creature, he might as well have gone white, his jaw unhinging to hang slackly without so much of a sound escaping. Only mentally can he summon any response, and it comes with the breathlessness of a whisper. ** ... ... what? ** Haikari squirms in her place, her face flaming with the heat of her outburst, wishing that there were so many things that could have gone unsaid. ** Sending doesn't lie, Reon. So...now you know the truth. ** equally quiet. She's admired you from the moment you taught her the first lesson, died inside every time you became involved with the liquor, and now...now she just wants you to leave her to her own foolishness. So what do you say to that? ** I... ** Reon stares for a moment, before he blinks slowly, looking down. ** I... ** Oh, he's doing good. ** ... dropped my helmet ... ** Close enough. Haikari eyes you, her blue eyes bright with tears. ** Is that all you can say? ** ** What do you want me to say? ** Reon returns quietly without looking at you, a wave of his hand bringing the helmet floating back up to him, grasping it with white-knuckled fingers. Haikari's face is pale as she looks at you, something of a matching accessory to your hands. ** Nothing. You don't owe me anything, Reon. I asked you to teach me. ** ** You ran away from the mountain, ** the Chosen returns hoarsely, or as hoarse as a sending can be. ** You threw everything I have taught you in my face. Then you wouldn't return with me when I came to get you. Why should I even bother with you at all now? ** Haikari's teeth click together as her jaw snaps shut decisively. ** I don't know. Reon. You're good at making your own choices, I don't know why you are bothering to ask me now. ** Crystalline eyes narrow on her coldly. ** Then you don't have an answer. ** Haikari stamds up sharply. ** None that you will want to hear, Reon. Go back to your drink. It's safer that way. ** seems the strength is returning to her again after all. Haikari hasn't forgotten who she is, even if the Outside frightens her more than she dares recall. She may not have forgotten who she is, but she certainly seems to have forgotten her place. Crystalline eyes flash with sudden renewed anger, before the Chosen bears down on her, a hand snapping out to try and grab her by the wrist. ** I don't know what rubbish they fed you Outside, little gazer, but you'd better get rid of it right NOW! ** Haikari doesn't flinch, or move except to raise her eyes to yours, a faint smile on her face, for she's finally found the courage to tell you the truth. ** You are everything a Chosen should be, Reon. I love you for it. And that is the truth I dared not speak. ** Reon's fingers tighten about her wrist, his eyes widening in turn after recieving a response far different than the one he expected. Two seconds go by before he blinks, then he fumbles, lips set tight in a grimace. ** Haikari, I... Shyrel... You /know/ about Shyrel... ** Haikari nods, the look of hopeless adoration fading in her eyes. Yes, she knows. ** I know...and I should have said nothing. I am...sorry that I couldn't be Banyl. I would be proud to be your daughter. ** ** I... ** Something shatters in Reon's eyes, the crystalline glass scattering in a thousand directions, a step taken back as he releases her wrist. ** I... ** He made amends with her spirit back at the Palace, but... oh, the things he missed. Two thousand years slept away in a bundle of wrapstuff, and he lost so much more than time during his slumber. The knot in his throat is swallowed, settling deeply into the pit of his chest. ** I.. should go... ** Haikari nods her head slightly, accepting that you cannot accept her as what she offers herself up as. ** Please....don't drink tonight, Reon. Think of what has happened with a clear head. ** Reon doesn't respond, which may or may not be a good thing. He simply settles his helmet back on his head, colourless strands of hair still peeking out from beneath it, before vanishing back the way he came, curtain rustling lightly in his wake. Haikari slumps to her bed, sadness etching lines across her face for a moment before she smoothes her brow on purpose. Haikari sends openly ** Some things should never be said, my teacher. ** [end log.]
