This is the website of the Twelvetrees Press and Twinpalms Publishers, the wonderful folks who are dedicated to promoting beautiful photography by Witkin, Ellen von Unwerth, Herb Ritts, and Robert Mapplethorpe, among others.

The Burns Archive: the greatest collection of medical photography in the world. Witkin co-authored two books with Mr. Burns, Harm's Way and Masterpieces of Medical Photography.

An excellent interview with Witkin, with pictures and a request for models. The interview is from 1/96, the request is from 5/97. He's looking for a blind woman aged 20-40, and a woman with no arms.

This site is kinda cute...It features about 15 photographs, as well as works by other photographers and writers. It kinda lacks in depth, but visually, is quite interesting, and it gets points since the index of the photography section features a wonderful print of louise brooks in profile, holding a white pearl necklace (which is the same print i have at home on my wall)...

i bite my tongue. this guy has a hidden page with a treasure trove of witkin images on it. i just have to find it again. until then, read the nicely collected witkin bio he wrote. :)

hmph. i used to think mark romanek (director of nin's "closer" video) was cool until i discovered how MUCH he actually stole from witkin. granted, i think it was pretty amazing how well he recreated it, but still...

Another short piece on Witkin, simply describing his work in general. The site calls him the "creator of monstrous art pieces" and features a few of his pieces. Not too exciting, but a good introduction to his work.

From the Apr. 20, 1995 issue of The Met, this article does of brief overview of his work, describing a few of them and whatnot, but also contains a few quotes from the man himself! Apparently, he's a practicing Roman Catholic, which is cool...It's always the current and ex-catholics that are all fucked up imho. HAHA!

The interview with Witkin was not up as of 7 oct 97, but i guess it's coming soon, and is in RealAudio.

[NOTE: If anyone can translate it, I would really appreciate it.] Joel-Peter Witkin - Joel-Peter Witkin. "Min konst är heligt arbete De bilder jag skapar är mina böner." Joel-Peter Witkin är förmodligen den mest...

Luna Cornea is a Mexican photography magazine that featured some of Wikin's work in their issue #7. The address for the magazine's offices are listed on the index page of the site, so perhaps one can still purchase back issues.

This site has a little ditty on witkin, mostly commenting on how strange his photographs are. It features pieces that I can't hold on my website b/c of lack of space.

Again, if you can translate Portuguese, please e-mail me!

Any italian speakers out there who like witkin?

-columns, comparisons, etc.-

A very post-modernist essay on the relationship between Witkin's work and the viewer. Contains intriguingly large vocabularly that seems to be a staple of the world of artistic criticism.

A very long article about different coalitions' attack on art and the NEA, with maybe 5 sentences about Joel-Peter Witkin, and mainly just that one of his exhibitions was being shown as an example of "bad art."

Another long article, this time describing two rituals/performance art pieces in which Cynthia Witkin (wife of Joel-Peter Witkin) was involved in with Coil in 1985 in San Francisco.

From the article "Feminism, Photography, Censorship, and Sexually Transgressive Imagery: The Work of Robert Mapplethorpe, Joel-Peter Witkin, Jacqueline Livingston, Sally Mann, and Catherine Opie," by photographer Connie Samaras: "My initial reaction was that here was someone who was challenging the vocabulary of high art to include forbidden representations of masturbation, transsexualism and sado-masochism."

Self proclaimed "premiere guide to psycho-erotica excess and trangressive culture." ooh, you're titillating me, really. actually, it didn't because the only way to get to the witkin stuff is to buy back issues, and the only way to get to the dirty pictures is to pay! wah.

Interesting article that mocks anne rice and lauds witkin
