A strange piece of work. On this album there are more guest appearances than on any other Current 93 -album.
The album in all, because of this, is not a very coherent whole, and apparently it is not supposed to be one either. Four tracks on the album were recorded in Japan and the last song was recorded a lot earlier, in 1985. Most of the songs on the album have been released previously in a form or another.
The first seven tracks, the original Earth Covers Earth plus one additional track, are all acoustic played mostly with guitars and violins. But the thing is, not all the tracks are different songs, but there is a lot of repetition. Two versions of "The Dilly Song", two version of "Earth Covers Earth" (the other one as "Time Tryeth Truth") and "Hourglass for Diana" and "Hourglass for Rosy Abelisk" are basically the same song, too, only with a different singer.
On the songs recorded in Japan, there is two versions of "At the Blue Gates of Death". Musically, all these are also acoustic. Very simple compositions, and beautiful, too.
The last track, "The Dreammoves of the Sleeping King", is close to the material on Dog's Blood Rising album. One major difference being, though, that it is a boring song, and at least we fail to get anything out of it.
Lyrically the album is very Tibetian, though this one does not have a clear theme. Some of the lyrics are also taken from other poets. For example, the lyrics for "She Is Dead and All Fall Down" are from Thomas Chatterton. The poem is touching but Tibet's interpretation is not a very enthusiastic one. What it comes to Tibet, the best perfomance on the album would be "The Blue Gates of Death (Before and Beyond Them)", a nice perky song about death with an inspired recital.
Rose McDowall seems to get out of breath singing "The Dilly Song". John Balance is present on the album but luckily enough he is not singing anything this time.
The songs on the album are nice, but too much repetition leaves the listener unfulfilled. Unlike all the other Current 93 releases, this album works best just listening a few songs from it at a time. It is not a whole and should not be listened to as that. A slight disappointment.
