A compilation album with some new unreleased tracks and their greatest hits from all the albums.
The album shows well the changes Sisters have gone over the years. From "Body and Soul" to a previously unreleased "Under the Gun". The music has changed from melodic gothic rock to hard uncompromising gothic rock with heavy metal guitars (SIC!).
Andrew Eldritch's lyrics of course have remained just as interesting. On each album the overall theme has somewhat changed and the compilation brings that out. From dwelling in misery to making a world of his own to accepting this world and living in it with one's own rules.
The songs from First and Last and Always have gone through some kind of change sound-wise. The sound on these versions is clearer and less goth-like. The version of "Dr. Jeep" is cut and "Vision Thing" and ".." are mixed longer than the versions on the albums. One major surprise (and disappointment to some) on the compilation is "Temple of Love '92", which features the old song played with heavy metal guitars and a woman (Ofra Haza) singing on the background. This is one good example of how much the band has changed. Unfortunately, the original one is not on this album.
"Under the Gun", shows where Sisters are going. The thing is, that it seems like Eldritch does not have much to say anymore. The song is about love (though, everything is very nicely said). And it seems that Eldritch nowadays is more showing off what a good writer he is than making a point. The song is not all bad though, actually it is a good song.
The songs made after this album and are currently unreleased, are somewhat alike to "Under the Gun", at least lyrically (songs like "Summer" and "(We Are the Same) Suzanne)". The lyrics are written by an excellent poet who has nothing to say anymore. Makes you wonder why Eldritch hates goths today. Surely not because they remind him of the times when he had strength and was not merely an entertainer but an artist; when he was less interested in getting a large audience to cheer on him and more interested on "purity of intent".
