I think you'll agree that there is nothing as wonderful in this life
as finding your true soul mate.
And I am happy to say it does happen with certain individuals just
as it happened to Spencer
and myself (of course, with us it didn't happen on the Internet,
because
they didn't have the Internet in those days, but they did
have Tupperware parties.)
Although I am the first one to complain about the dreadful amount
of sex going on on the
Web, I can also say that it has been instrumental in people truly
fated to come together (the Web,
I mean, not the sex.) Here are some wonderful examples of people
I have come in contact with
who have met each other on the Internet and have formed lasting
relationships.
It's hard to say, because all the couples are so special, but I
think William Honig and
Bonnie Biffle are my favorite. They met each other on a Xoom
Chat Board where
somehow they got to discussing the daily e-mails they get from Xoom
and which of the
6528 items Xoom offered for sale were good bargains and which were
not.
So well did they hit it off, unbeknownst to the other, each immediately
logged on
"The Original Internet Love Test " to see if he were compatible
with the fascinating
individual he had just met. Of course they were fabulously
compatible,
and soon William was flying to Manitoba, Canada to ask Bonnie
to be his bride.
Spence and I attended the wedding in Skippack, Pennsylvania, where
William owns a
99¢ Store franchise, and now Bill and Bonnie spend most of
their time logging on e-Bay.
As hard as it is to believe, because she looks so American, the
girl here is from
the Armenian section of Russia. Her real name is Svetlana
Ishkandarian,
although she calls herself Sammy now that she is living in Kenosha,
Wisconsin with her
adorable hubby, Mick McCovey. By one of those strange twists
of fate, last November Mick
accidentally logged on to a site called "Affectionate Russian Beauties",
and before he knew it,
there was Svetlana staring up at him. Mick immediately sent
her an e-mail. Even though
this extraordinary web site offers free translations, Mick did not
need to avail himself
since Svetlana wrote better English than he did. (That's how
anxious she was to get
out of that dreadful country.) One thing led to another, and
in no time Sammy was in
Kenosha exchanging marriage vows. The irony is that Mick's
grandfather was
one of the founders of the America First Committee, and his mother
was Senator
Joseph McCarthy's massage therapist.
Will wonders never cease! They have a whole chat board on
AOL for people who are
into shoes. I'd never heard of such a thing, so I told my
best friend Ruth, and Ruth only
laughed, because she is so much more sophisticated than I.
It was on this chat board
that Sandy Devere met her future husband, Alex Cottrell. I've
never seen a man
pursue a woman with such intensity. Maybe it was because Sandy
was a saleswoman
in San Diego at Fergie's Foot Locker. All I know is that Alex
insisted he come
and live at Sandy's place rather than her coming to him in Sioux
City. And he is
anything but a chauvinist. He insists Sandy keep her job.
As a matter of fact.
he quit his own job as a meter reader for the Sioux City Power and
Light Company
and is now working at Fergie's Foot Locker.
