The Day of Equal Light and Darkness

Screenplay by Fred588, based on the story "The Fellowship" by Derek Jayson

Scene 1

Hold a black screen for 10 to 15 seconds with a background of a distant and complex drum beat and some very odd chanting, the text of which is unintelligible. Then fade in to a ground-level framing shot of a dismal-lloking swamp/jungle at twilight. Some swamp sounds should be audible in addition to the distant drumming and chanting. Then pan to a distant shot of a column of people moving through the jungle. Finally, zoom in slowly to focus on the head of the column. The volume of the drum beat and chanting increases as we zoom closer. We see a column of people in strange, primitive clothing, walking solemnly, and chanting to the drum beat.

Scene 2

A different view of the column. The camera dollies to one side and watches as the column slowly passes. After a dozen or so people pass by we see two people carrying a litter. On the litter is Jenna, wearing a very light sarong-like wrap. The camera zooms and pans to follow her face as she passes slowly by. She appears fully awake and serene, not at all upset or alarmed.

Scene 3

A view from the far side of a large pool of mud (at least 20 feet across. There is a small plank constructed on the side opposite the camera, that projects several feet out over the mud, a few inches above its surface. The camera zooms in to focus on the plank, then looks up as the column of people arrive. The column reaches the edge of the mud and the people move in opposite directions alternately so as to form themselves around the perimeter of the mud. As the litter carriers arrive, they stop directly behind the plank and put the litter down.

Shot of three girls, each 21 years old, plus a slightly older woman. The three girls are all dressed in white sarongs. The older woman wears a sarong with an straw-yellow color. All four are intently watching the proceedings. The voice of the medicine man can still be heard in the background. The older woman leans toward the three girls as if to speak to them without being overheard by others.

Woman: "One of you will have this honor next year….Whoever wants it the most and works the hardest to earn it."

Scene 10

Head and shoulder shot of the medicine Man:

Medicine Man: "You give us much and we can do little in return. Accept our small tribute. On this day we give you the best we have. We give you one of our own. Twenty-one winters ago four females survived their first year among us. Three of them are still with us. In the last year these young, healthy women have been severely tested in competition for the honor of serving you and the one called Jenna has been victorious. Jenna has earned the right to give herself to you now."

Scene 11

Close up of Janna. She stands serenely just to one side of the plank. There is a subtle, but distinct smile (almost of triumph) on her lips.

Medicine Man: "Are you ready?"

Jenna: "I am ready."

Medicine Man: "You may now join with Mother Earth. You may have until the moon sets to prepare yourself for the final act of joining.

Jenna: (softly) "I need no further preparation. I am ready."

She steps up onto the plank.

Scene 12

View from the side of the plank. Jenna walks forward carefully but steadily. She drops her sarong from her shoulders as she walks. When she gets to the end she does not hesitate but steps down onto the mud. She starts to walk forward and gets two or three steps before sinking to he knees and getting stuck. The drumming and chanting resume as she enters the mud.

Scene 14

Shot with at least two cameras and edited together later. Jenna slowly sinks completely into the mud. She tries to keep looking straight ahead but several times tilts her head backward to breathe after the mud reaches above her nose. Several times she throws her head back for gasping breaths that becpme more and more difficult until finally she fails to raise her mouth above the surface and the mud fills her mouth. She makes no other attempt to struggle. She also shows considerable, slightly erotic, pleasure in the entire procedure. She has no dialogue other than a few groans or expressions of pleasure.

Scene 14 is interrupted part way through by scenes 15 and 16.

Scene 15

Shot of the three girls and the woman.

Woman: "Isn’t it wonderful!"

Girl #1: "It will be my turn next year."

Girl #2: "You’ll have to fight me for it."

Scene 16

Shot of the Medicine Man.

Medicine Man: "It is done. Mother Earth has taken Jenna to join her. All will be well for another year. Mother Earth, we will return at this time in one year to serve you again."

Scene 17

Shot looking down at the mud. It moves as if disturbed by a sudden movement within its depths. Several air bubbles gurgle to the surface.
