Here's Sandra, in the middle of the unwrapping session. Books are a popular present in our family. Mum is holding a big book about Antarctica, telling stories of the first explorers and the history of the continent. It has some lovely photos. By her feet somewhere (or still to be unwrapped) is a well-illustrated book on garden design, a hobby which several of us subscribe to.
Mum spent a fair bit of Christmas day cooking. We'd talked about going to the beach because it's always quiet on Christmas Day but absolutely packed on Boxing Day, but it was overcast and windy in the morning so we didn't. So Mum took the ingredients Dad had got and started making pie. Dad had asked Elizabeth (Grandma) what she was taking to dinner, and she said pumpkin pie and pecan pie, so that's what we made. When we finally got around to eating them, after a good turkey dinner, it was hard to resist taking an extra slice or two. The pumpkin was wonderful and subtle, and the pecan was incredibly sweet. Only problem was, the pecan pie hadn't quite set all the way through, so it was a little hard to serve, but oh! so good. We tried rebaking it the next day for lunch, but forgot about it and it overbaked a little much. Oh well, next time.
