Well..I've seen a few attempts made to produce a walkthrough or faq much like this one,
but none of them really complete and most of them made playing through the Japanese
version of Xenogears. (I don't know what differences there are, aside from the names,
but reading the names can get a little confusing for me. ^_^ I will only ever play the
North American version, I'm afraid). But anyway, after a bit of messing around, I've
finally decided to do a plot walkthrough. Frankly, this game needs one! I am playing
the game through for the third time and there are still subtleties I missed. So, be
*very* forewarned, there are spoilers within! As of this date, the walkthrough is
complete only up until Dazil, though of course more will follow later. ^_^

And without further ado...

**Introduction**
"I am Alpha and Omega.
the beginning and the end.
the first and the last..."
Thousands of years ago.
The Eldridge, a gigantic interplanetary emigrant spacecraft, suffered a sudden shipwide
systems malfunction. On the monitors that warned of the ensuing danger, a mysterious
shadow flickered for but an instant. Before the spacecraft's crew could respond, someone
or something had taken over their entire ship.
As the passengers and crew attempted to evacuate, the spacecraft's own laser cannons
coldly turned and shot them down. The captain had no choice but to activate the ship's
self-destruct mechanism. In a flash of light, the spacecraft fell to a nearby planet.
Born from the fallen wreckage, 'she' slowly arose, her long hair blowing in the wind as
her eyes relfected the dawn's breaking light. Reflecting the start of the day that 'god'
and 'humankind' fell to earth.
=-Note-=
The introduction is taken straight from the instruction manual for Xenogears. Just as a
point of interest, for those people who didn't quite catch what the monitors read in the
intro (presumably the 'mysterious shadow' the intro talks about...) in red lettering,
thousands of times, it said "You shall be Gods." ^_^
**Background Info**
On the Ignas continent, a war has been raging for hundreds of years. To the North is the
Kislev Empire, and in the South lies the desert kingdom of Aveh. The war has been going
on for so long, the people of both places have forgotten what the original dispute was.
A new and deadly element was introduced into the war, however--excavated from ancient
ruins across the world's surface, were deadly weapons of war--giant robots, called
Gears. An instution of people devoted to preserving culture, the Ethos, were able to
repair tools and robots excavated from these sites. Both countries dug up many of the
Gears, and had the Ethos repair them. For awhile the war was in a stalemate.
However, due to increased resources available in Kislev's ruins, they had the upper
hand in the war.
Just when it seemed as if Aveh would lose to Kislev's superior military power, a
mysterious military force appeared and made contact with Aveh. Called 'Gebler,' their
military power sided with Aveh and made it possible for the losing country to be back
in the running. Aveh began to invade territory after territory belonging to Kislev,
seemingly unstoppable in their quest for domination of the Ignas continent.
~~~~~Chapter 1: Lahan Village~~~~~
The game starts out with a quick cut scene--a village in flames, with devastation all
around. A man in a gear is battling in the middle of the village, while a man on the
ground, nearby, shouts at him to stop, and that he must not fight here. Paying no heed,
the man continues his battle...
In the gear is of course, Fei, our hero. This is actually a look into the future, which
you see as you continue to play the game.
The game begins with Fei Fong Wong in a small room, painting. He decides to take a short
break, and as he wanders around talking to various people, you get a fair idea of his
background.
===FEI FACT===
Fei came to the village of Lahan 3 years ago in the company of a strange, robed man.
He was bloody and wet with rain. No one knows if this man might have been his father
or not. The village Chief, Chief Lee, adopted him. He had nightmares for months after,
and woke up calling out for his father.==
-Secondary Character--Secondary Character--Secondary Character--Secondary Character-
Dan
A character of some consequence, you won't see him all *that* much, but he will show
up a few more times during the game. (i.e. the tournament in Bledavik; and he is also
in Shevat later on). This little fellow really has it in for you, so get used to some
pretty scathing comments. He doesn't like Fei much.
-Secondary Character--Secondary Character--Secondary Character--Secondary Character-
There is much cause for joy in the village; tomorrow, Fei's good friends Timothy and
Alice are going to tie the knot! As Fei leaves his home, Dan, (Alice's younger brother)
accosts him and when Fei speaks with him a few minutes later, he has a proposition for
Fei: he suggests that Fei should steal Alice and run off with her and marry her instead
of Timothy. Of course Fei won't do that, and he tells Dan so, and eventually ends up in
the bride-to-be's house and speaks with her. There is some suggestion of romantic
tension, at least on Alice's part--she seems to regret her engagement to Timothy and she
wishes she had met Fei earlier so that she might have married him instead. (This doesn't
really have any consequence, even later, so don't worry about it).
Alice asks Fei to run an errand for her, to Dr.Citan Uzuki's house to borrow some
camera equipment for the big day tomorrow. Fei agrees readily, and sets off to visit
Citan's house.
~~~~~Chapter 2: Mountain Path~~~~~

Citan Uzuki
Citan is a doctor who runs a medical clinic on the outskirts of Lahan. He is much given
to scholarly pursuits, and is usually the one who will come up with the solution to
problems as the adventure continues. His past is shrouded in mystery, though, actually,
you can figure it out if you pay very close attention to all of the clues that are given
even early on in the game. (Actually, the instructional manual will tell you too, but
that's just a little too blatant for my tastes. At this point, Fei doesn't know, so you
shouldn't either. :P) Citan is a kick-ass fighter (the best in the game, in many
people's opinion) and when he joins your party he is an incredible asset.
=-Main Character-==-Main Character-==-Main Character-==-Main Character-==-Main Character-=
When he arrives at Citan's house, Citan is out back attempting to restore what he calls
a 'Land Crab', an odd device with rotors and many legs. (It flies, shouldn't it be a
'Sky Crab?') Anyhow, Citan tells Fei to look at something nifty he has inside his store
room. Inside there is a music box, which opens and the music "Small of Two Pieces" plays.
Fei tells Citan when Citan joins him that the music makes him feel warm inside, and
Citan remarks that there must be a someone else living inside Fei, who used to listen
and love this music long ago. Incidentally, I'm pretty sure that the angel inside the
music box is the same angel from Shevat. When Fei leaves to go wait for Citan inside the
house, the box starts to shake and the angel within shatters. A startled Citan wonders
if it could be a bad omen, and also he wonders if it would be better to live a 'normal
life' as a 'son of man.'
~~~~~Chapter 3: Fallen Shadows~~~~~
As Fei is crossing the bridge leading away from Citan's house, the ground shakes and he
looks upwards--overhead fly a series of dark shapes, or, under closer examination--
Gears! They both run to the village, and they meet Timothy and Alice there. They haven't
left yet because they can't find Dan. Citan and Fei convince Timothy and Alice to leave
the village, and Citan goes to look for stragglers who have not left yet. He tells Fei
to do the same--but Fei gets distracted by the sight of a large gear, unmoving, in
front of him. At the gear's feet is a body, presumably the pilot. There is a short cut
scene, in which Fei looks up and sees a faceless child who looks much like himself
in the cockpit of the gear. The child is dressed similarly and has more bangs, and it
laughs evilly. Fei gapes and gasps, and then the vision is gone. Fei gets in the strange
gear, and fights a duo of the enemy gears, despite Citan's shouting that he cannot
fight here.
=-Note-=
Some interesting text scrolls across the screen when Fei enters the gear that will mean
more to you later. Part of it reads:
-Lamb-, Ignas dialect. No piloting exp.
And just after it says something about entering easy mode. And when he first gets in, it
is in gibberish until the language adjusts itself. Just a little something of interest.
I had totally forgotten about it when I understood what it really meant, aside from the
obvious. ^_^
Fei defeats the enemy gears, but many more show up as reinforcements. Among them is an
odd gear that is obviously not a drudge gear. This is Grahf, whom you encounter later.
(Trust me, more times than you want to think about. I am Grahf, the seeker of power,
yadda yadda, etc. etc.) Citan, meanwhile, encounters Dan, who was looking for Alice's
wedding dress. I guess he is not such a bad kid, afterall...anyhow, Timothy and Alice
show up--why they didn't leave when Citan told them to is beyond me, but... As Fei
watches, (I did not notice this myself until the second time I played the game) Grahf's
gear makes the smallest of gestures to one of the Musha gears near him, and the gear
opens fire on Timothy. Fei screams, but he is surrounded and helpless to help his
friend. There is a short cut scene to an image of Fei as a child, his face spattered
with blood. Then the Fei we know undergoes a strange momentary change--he looks like the
same small evil child from all the flashbacks, only older, and he laughs--and then, the
gear is enveloped in a flash of brilliant light.
~~~~~Chapter 4: Into The Woods~~~~~
When Fei awakens, it is to a nasty surprise--his village is destroyed. Both Timothy and
Alice are dead. (No, he was not aware of what happened with the gear, flashing light,
etc.) Citan informs him mostly of what happens, and little Dan flies at him with
accusations of his being a murderer. A stunned Fei is told by Citan that perhaps it is
best that he leave, as it will not be pleasant for any if he remains here. Still
somewhat disbelieving, Fei stops to look at the now dormant gear that destroyed his
village. Understandably, he isn't too kindly disposed towards it. Then he sets out for
Blackmoon Forest, towards Aveh. The idea behind this is that the soldiers of the night
before were from Kislev, and so it is least likely that he will be found by them in Aveh.
They were after the gear he occupied. Fei goes to Blackmoon Forest, and when he is
partway through it, he is stopped in his tracks by a voice.
~~~~~Chapter 5: The Girl In The Forest~~~~~
=-Main Character-==-Main Character-==-Main Character-==-Main Character-==-Main Character-=
Elhaym Van Houten
Elhaym (aka Elly) is an officer in the Solaris military. This one you could've figured
out pretty easily. (What else is she doing in that forest?) She seems to be fairly
hot-tempered from the outset, but she also isn't too sure of herself. She is about Fei's
age, which makes her 18. She holds a fairly important position for someone so young.
Just after you meet her she will fight with you for awhile, but enjoy it while you can,
it'll be awhile before you see her again. As a fighter, Elly isn't that great until some
of the later levels, she has a wide array of spells, many of which aren't even that
great. But doesn't she just *look* cool when she fights? ^_^
=-Main Character-==-Main Character-==-Main Character-==-Main Character-==-Main Character-=
Elly holds a gun on Fei, hollering at him in some strange language--this is, presumably,
the Solarian dialect. After a moment she realizes he can't understand her, and switches
to the Ignas dialect Fei speaks, telling him to turn around. He is very apathetic
towards her, in fact daring her to shoot him. She's taken aback by this, after a few
interchanges deciding that he's weird. She's lost in the forest and trying to find her
way out just like Fei. All of a sudden, blue forest-elf thingies drop down behind Elly
and attack her. Fei shouts at them to leave Elly alone--even though she had not yet
introduced herself. Now how could he have known that?
After Fei plays the big hero and saves Elly, they have a brief conversation at a fire,
eventually deciding that they will cooperate even though Elly doesn't want to and acts
somewhat condescending, calling him a -Lamb- a few times. Fei reproachs her, saying she
might at least thank him for saving her ass. (Well, he didn't say that, but you know
what I mean). That night, Fei has a dream in which he is a child crying in a desert-sort
of place. There is a column of silhouettes walking by, but they do not talk to him even
when he screams at them to wait, don't leave him here. He sits down and cries again, and
a silhouette of a woman appears. She resembles Elly very much; and wears a glowing
necklace in the shape of a spikey cross. She offers her hand to him, and basically
makes him feel much better, at which point Fei wakes up.
He and Elly have a fight, basically Fei tells her what happened, and at first he takes
the blame for the destruction of his village, but eventually gets to blaming it on the
pilot of the gear that crash-landed in his village to begin with. This sets Elly off,
because, of course, SHE was the pilot of said gear. There is a little anime-cut scene
afterwards. Elly leaves Fei sulking, and the cut-scene is partially her reliving the
conversation of moments before, but interspersed with images of Elly herself. She is
among bodies, with her hands covered in blood. As Fei pleads innocence for what happened
in his village, Elly herself is pleading with someone unknown. This cut scene is from
her past. "I didn't do it! It wasn't me!" she screams. "I'm not that strong. I'm not
even that talented." As the scene ends, she reaches a conclusion. "I am a coward."
~~~~~Chapter 6: Broken Silence~~~~~
When Elly leaves Fei, a huge reptile thing attacks her; a Rankar dragon. Fei hears her
scream and comes running, of course, and attempts to take the thing on with his bare
fists. After a little while, Citan shows up in the Land Crab, carrying the gear Fei
piloted the night before with him. He drops it, telling Fei he must use it to save him.
Fei does, with obvious reluctance, and easily defeats the Rankar. Afterwards, the three
of them make camp and Fei sleeps while Elly and Citan talk. Citan says to Elly that he
saw a gear on the outskirts of the village, deserted. He follows this with "Nil bayer
dars legus?" This means, 'It was yours, right?" Elly admits the gear was hers, and that
she was the one who crashed in Lahan village. She admits regret for blaming Fei for the
whole mess, and quotes, when questioned by Citan, something from her people (Solarians).
"The Shepherds, -Abel-, took control over the surface dwelling -Lambs-, possessing the
right to give life and death unto them as they see fit." Elly, however, is beginning
to have doubts about this. Citan asks her, politely, to leave Fei and himself, telling
her that this is not her place. She should return to her family. Elly does so.
~~~~~Chapter 7: Path to Aveh~~~~~
In the morning, Fei tells Citan he overheard half of the conversation with Elly. He
knows now who Elly is and where she is from. As they are heading down the forest path
towards the desert and Aveh, a huge battleship flies overhead. Citan explains that it
must be a ship to extinguish border skirmishes with Kislev. He mentions also that Kislev
and Aveh are fighting over the ruins where gears are to be found, and they continue
on to Dazil. Here they must find parts for Weltall, which is damaged beyond operation.
~~~~~Chapter 8: Dazil~~~~~
Fei and Citan reach Dazil and Citan tells Fei they must go to the Ethos workshop in order to
see about finding parts for the damaged Weltall. At the workshop, they are told that they
cannot get parts for Weltall at the workshop because it is a military gear; and the Ethos
headquarters only services civilian gears. Fei asks Citan if he can talk to him for a sec;
they go up on a bridge overlooking the Ethos workshop and have a conversation.
Fei suggests that since they cannot find the parts for Weltall, perhaps they should just not
fix it at all. Citan seems as if he is patronizing Fei, and tells him if that is what he
wants..but that they must move Weltall as far from Lahan as possible. He tells Fei that he
has a theory--Weltall is an experimental Kislev gear, and the Gebler Special Forces stole
it from Kislev. Since there is new technology present in Weltall, Aveh will want it, as will
Kislev come looking for it--even if it is totaled, they will want to save the parts. If they
leave Weltall near Lahan, the two factions will simply fight all over again. Of course, Fei
does not want that, and so, he grudgingly agrees.
Citan suggests that since Aveh and Kislev are always skirmishing out in the desert, if he
rents a sand buggy and goes out to the battlefields there, he will be able to find some
parts from wrecked gears there with which to fix Weltall. He tells Fei to remain in Dazil,
while he goes out with the buggy. Of course, Fei doesn't, and he follows after Citan has
been gone only a short while.
Out in the desert, Fei sees large Aveh gears hopping around. He follows them, worried for
Citan and wondering what they're up to. At this point, a huge flying saucer type thing with
a force field around it flies overhead. This is, of course, the sky city Shevat. Fei keeps
following the Aveh gears until a group of soldiers on motorcycles pass him; he runs out in
front of one and steals his motorcycle, and follows the gears in that fashion. Fei keeps on
the gears' tails, and suddenly, he is blown off his motorcycle. Two of the Aveh gears come
up to him on both sides, and it seems like Fei is trapped, when all of a sudden, Citan
shows up, bearing Weltall. Fei gets in Weltall, and appropriately, whups the Aveh gears'
asses. At this point, complete with creepy music and a glowing orange moon behind him, a
large gear and a strange 'man in black' show up. That's the gear, remember it from before,
in Lahan? This is the same man and gear who ordered Timothy shot.
-Secondary Character--Secondary Character--Secondary Character--Secondary Character-
Grahf "Seeker of Power"
This is Grahf, (as his much quoted title states) the 'seeker of power.' Get used to him,
you will be seeing him quite a bit, and usually when it is least opportune for you. And when
you are reading this part of the walkthrough pay close attention to the things he says. They
become fairly important later. And also get used to the following passage, because you'll be
hearing it a fair bit too. "I am Grahf, the Seeker of Power. Doth thou desire the power?
Blossom, o fallen seed, and draw upon they hidden powers. Grant unto thee, the power of the
glorious Mother of Destruction!" Yes, I can quote it. Why? Well..if you've played the game,
you know. If you're just cheating and reading this, well...you'll know soon enough. Does
anybody else wonder at the threatening quality of a guy in a jester's cap?
-Secondary Character--Secondary Character--Secondary Character--Secondary Character-
Anyhow, the following is the gist of the conversation between Fei and Grahf.
Grahf, upon seeing Fei finish the Aveh gears, remarks something to the effect that Fei has
always had a desire for battle and blood; and that he is glad his nature has not changed.
At this point, there is a short anime-cut scene; in which Grahf's voice says, "You killed
her! Not me, you coward. It was you..." And Fei's voice protests, "No, I..." The scene shows
the little Fei with blood on his face again, and then once more the little evil version of
Fei.
Grahf informs Fei that he sent the gears to Lahan village, as a catalyst to awaken Fei's
power. He tells Fei he has great use for his power, and that a voice inside of Fei craves
destruction. Grahf intends to use Fei's power to 'destroy mother god.'
===GRAHF FACT===
Ok, let's get this straight right now. Grahf is one screwed up crazy mother of a bad guy.
But keep playing. It gets better. -_-;; Just so you know.==
Grahf taunts Fei; telling him that he knew Fei's father, and that he 'enjoyed his death
scream.' Eventually all of this leads to Grahf summoning a big wormy thing and leaving,
(don't they always?) which Fei must fight. And after he defeats it, Weltall breaks down.
Citan tells him that the repairs on Weltall were only temporary; not meant to withstand
outright battle. And at just that moment, another pair of Aveh gears show up at just the
worst possible moment (don't THEY always?) and Fei and Citan are captured, as they cannot
defend themselves in any way.
~~~~~Chapter 9:Desert Attack!~~~~~
Fei, asleep in the cell he shares with Citan, has a sort of dream. (In the form of an anime
cut scene.) In the dream, are three men. One is Grahf, the other might be Fei's father, and
the third is a strange white-faced man with scarlet/orangeish hair. (This is of course, Id).
Grahf says something to the effect of, "Now we will join together." And Fei's father retorts,
"I will never let you have him, even if it kills me." The three are standing in the rain,
and each has a glowing battle aura. Incidentally, this scene ought to be signifigant if
you think about it--when Fei first came to Lacan, wasn't he dripping wet, as well as hurt?
A conversation between Citan and Fei follows.
Fei tells Citan, that he is not sure who he is anymore. He doesn't remember his father--and
how come he never noticed that he does not have memories exceeding three year's length
before?...After a time, Citan suggests Fei get some rest, and he stays there thinking to
himself. "(It was him! No mistake...That was no coincidence! Could it be that we are
approaching the -Time- of the -Gospel-...?") There is a memory of Citan's, in which he has
a conversation with someone who is only given the name "Emperor," as a handle. Citan is
asking him about the time of the Gospel, and the Emperor tells him that humans are people
expelled from Paradise to live on the cruel earth. They must once again return to god and
paradise, and that is the time of the Gospel. But first, they must find God's resting place
and resurrect him.
Who is this strange Emperor? What alliances does Citan have we don't know about...?
At this point, the Aveh transport is attacked by a strange desert ship...
