Vocabulary

Here are vocabulary words from the novel.  I recommend that all of my students keep a list of words they do not know from all of their reading assignments and that they look up at least ten words from that list per week.  This list would be helpful for any student hoping to improve his or her vocabulary, epecially those who are college-bound and planning to take the SAT or ACT test in the next few years.  This list is broken down according to where a term appeared in the text.

Part I-The Hearth and the Salamander: kerosene, luxuriously, prior, compress, hypnotize, miraculous, illumination, marionette, thimble, distill, gush, disposable, dissolve, drench, apprenticeship, obligate, salamander, exotic, capillary, jolt, phoenix, mourn, glitter, proclivity, cellophane, ignite, asylum, odious, flourish, tamp, cacophony, centrifuge, pantomime, cymbal, incinerator

Part II-The Sieve And The Sand: rationalize, ventilator, sieve, suffuse, dentifrice, garment, arsonist, devour, gimmick, praetor, insidious, linguist, contemptible, trifle, disperse, mingle

Part III-Burning Bright: simmer, reel, fumble, writhe, manikin, instinctive, plummet, flail, phantom, exhalation, contaminate, hover, meteor, musk, wary, simultaneous, convolution, desolation, Ecclesiastes
