Lesson Plans

Here is a sample of some lesson plans I've written.

(available for download in PDF format)

  • The People of Salmon - This was the second lesson in a unit on the Kwakiutl Indian tribe. Students learned about the life cycle of the salmon (an important resource for the Kwakiutl) and compared the life cycle to the legend of the Salmon People shared by many of the Native Americans of the Pacific Northwest.
  • The People of Cedar - This was the third lesson in the unit on the Kwakiutl. The students had learned earlier that the Kwakiutl used cedar bark for many things, including weaving it into clothing. They then analyzed the barks of different trees in order to discover what special properties cedar bark has that other trees do not.
  • Totem Poles - Students gain understanding of the storytelling properties of the symbols on totem poles by working in groups to create their own stories. The groups then create their own poles in order to tell the stories they have written.
  • Timelines - Students learn what a timeline is and how one is put together by filling in the blanks on a timeline based on Ezra Jack Keats' The Snowy Day. Later, they create timelines of their own lives and shared them with the class.
  • Natural Resources - Students explore what natural resources are by looking at the natural resources of the state of Pennsylvania plus some of the natural resources of the state of Michigan.
