Demand for halt to grisly trade in aborted baby body parts

August 24, 1999

According to an article in Alberta Report by Celeste McGovern, in their August 23, 1999 edition, Steven Bamforth, a geneticist who deals in fetal research in Edmonton, has stated, “If society said this research is not acceptable, of course, we would immediately desist.” This statement raises many questions. Jim Hughes, National President of Campaign Life Coalition, asks:

Does society know that Canadian researchers sort through aborted bodies obtained from local abortion sites and ship body parts, eyes, hearts, livers and cardiac blood to research facilities throughout the country? Does society know that Canadian researchers order body parts from thriving U.S. businesses which derive their “product” from 30 to 40 week aborted babies, especially taken from their mothers with great care to preserve their monetary value as specimens?

Sometimes these mothers protest, too late, and they are drugged so that their protests go unheeded.  Frequently the babies are delivered alive and then killed and turned over to be dissected. Price lists for body parts are distributed to regular customers and courier services used to send the orders.

Does society know that “suppliers” use partial birth abortion to deliver late term “specimens” to research facilities? This grisly method of abortion is a way to obtain ideal research specimens.  Information on U.S. suppliers is documented in the May issue of “Life Talk” a video magazine of Life Dynamics of Texas, headed by Mark Crutcher.

Does society know that there is no law, only non-enforced guidelines concerning fetal tissue collection.  There is a moratorium on research in Canada, which research facilities find a way to get around, but in the U.S. Bill Clinton, in one of his first acts as President removed all such restrictions.

Does society know that to date, work using fetal tissue for diseases such as Parkinson’s have produced unsatisfactory results?

Society must be allowed to see what is happening in research laboratories in Canada, funded by government monies in the form of research grants.

Campaign Life Coalition demands that the use of body parts from aborted babies cease; that cross-border trade in parts from bodies obtained in this way be stopped and that the profiteers of human misery, who have found a “product” to make their grisly abortion trade even more profitable be prevented from operating in Canada.
