The Castle in Rovereto is an
example of a medieval defensive fortress.
In the course of its long history (since the middle of the fourteenth century) the castle has been the scene of many an armed conflict : leading to the castle's fortification, in particular during the Venetian domination, by famous military architects and warlords. It is a real fortress of strong military character with moats, bastions, siege wells, casemates and secret passages. After the Venetian period of domination, the castle passed to the Hapsburgs, then to become a protagonist during the Great War, when it was occupied by the Austrian Army and used as a barracks until 1914. Today the Castle houses the Rovereto War Museum with a large collection of arms. Tiziana Ciaghi |
