The name of this picture by Scottish artist William Clark is mystifying to some. It identifies a type of vessel from the early 1700s, the Snow was similar to a Brig, both types of vessel had two masts and had a gaff rigged sail aft of the mainmast. The difference was that the Snow carried this "Spanker" sail on a seperate small mast aft of the mainmast, as this permited more adjustment to the wind conditions. This picture was painted late in the use of such sail arrangements. Finally, all similar rigs were simply called Brigs, or Brigantines.
