Jump-Start Performance Co.'s Festival de Libre Enganche '97 was an exciting two-week event which featured performances and art exhibitions by local, regional, national and international Mexican and Mexican-American performing artists.

I had the wonderful opportunity to once again work with mi amiga and assistant coordinator Hortencia Ramirez of Malinalco, Mexico. She provided the invaluable assistance of contacting and confirming the participation of some wonderful Mexican talent. We could not have done it without her.

This year we had the added advantage of having the Festival's own documenting team. Victor Martinez (videographer) and Monica Naranjo (photographer) of Mexico City took it upon themselves to seek funding for their travel and equipment costs. All performances and art exhibitions were recorded and photographed.

It never ceases to amaze me how moving and "magical" the Festival has been--IS! The performances this year were critical, daring, exiting, experimental, fun, insightful, original, and personal. The Festival provided the opportunity to meet "artistas" with strong social conscience and to see and experience work for and about the people, particularly, our people--nuestra gente. --from both sides of the border.

We laughed and cried together. We sang and danced to heart beats and drum beats. We prayed to the old and new gods of wisdom, love and peace. But, most of all, we created a new wave of dialogue and exchange influenced by the artistic soul of humanity that can only enhance the goal for a peaceful and enlightened future.

Thank you, Hortencia, Monica, Victor, Humberto, Jaime, Enrique, Leonora, Michael, Raquel, Mirna, Roberto (de la suerte), Carlos, Jai, Jose Manuel (Topo), Rodney, Angeles, Marissa, Adelina, Alicia, Janie, Crystal, Jose, Deborah, Sherry, Angela, Bobby, Manuel, Valerie, El Centro Su Teatro, Enrique and Lucila, Grupo Tlaloc, Marcos, and MECA. ¡Que se hoiga! ¡Que se hoiga!
