Pua'a Pekipeki
Little Pig

Pua'a Pekipeki

Length: 12"
Material: Hau wood
Collection of the artist

This self-satisfied little fellow is one of the many embodiments of the pua`a (pig), which has a prominent role in Hawaiian mythology. Kamapua`a, (kah-mah-poo-AH-ah) was able to change from a handsome, mischievous boy into many manifestations of the pig, including cute little playful ones, pig-monsters capable of defeating entire armies, and even the kukui tree, which has leaves shaped like pig's ears, and the famous humuhumunukunukuahupua`a (trigger- fish), Pua'a Pekipeki frontal which has a snout like a pig and makes grunting sounds.

This piece was created for Marlenajon's mother as a keepsake.
