The Five Gospels:
The Search for the Authentic Words of Jesus
New Translation and Commentary by Robert W. Funk, Roy W. Hoover,
and The Jesus Seminar
paperback
In 1985 the Jesus Seminar, a distinguished group of biblical
scholars, embarked on a new assessment of the gospels, including
the recently discovered Gospel of Thomas. In pursuit of the historical
Jesus, they used their collective expertise to determine the
authenticity of the more than 1,500 sayings attributed to him.
Their remarkable findings appear in this book. According to the
Seminar, no more than 20 percent of the sayings attributed to
Jesus were uttered by him. This book contains illuminating commentary
and notes on the text of the gospels and rigorously explores
the historical and literary factors behind the Seminar's findings.
The Five Gospels is a major work of biblical scholarship that
gives new dimensions to the historical Jesus.

Jesus, a Revolutionary
Biography
John Dominic Crossan
paperback
Widely regarded as the leading authority on the words and life
of Jesus, Crossan presents Jesus as a social revolutionary who
preached and practiced a message of radical egalitarianism. The
Jesus portrayed by Crossan is a savvy and courageous Jewish Mediterranean
peasant who challenged the sacrosanct social rules regarding
class, gender, and status. What emerges from this stunning biography
is a vision of Jesus as a Jewish Socratic philosopher and political
agitator who gave voice to those who had never been heard and
love to the most cast-out members of society. He proclaimed --
in thought and action -- that all may participate in the rule
of God.

The Gospel According to Jesus:
A New Translation and Guide to His Essential Teachings for Believers
and Unbelievers
Stephen Mitchell
paperback
The Gospel According to Jesus is a new translation, from the
Greek, of what might be called the Essential Gospel. Gospel means
"good news." While the Gospels according to Mark, Matthew,
Luke, and John are to a large extent teachings about Jesus, Mr.
Mitchell has compiled a Gospel that is the teaching of Jesus.
Following the example of The Jefferson Bible, Mr. Mitchell has
retained only the authentic sayings and doings of Jesus, and
has omitted the passages added by the early church. What is left
is an immensely provocative and moving image of Jesus as a real
person and as a great spiritual teacher, an image that will challenge
and delight readers of any religion or of no religion. The Essential
Gospel is preceded by a long meditation on Jesus' life and teachings,
and is followed by Mr. Mitchell's detailed commentary on the
text, which draws on his own Judeo-Zen background and on illuminating
parallels from the Buddhist, Hindu, Taoist, Sufi, and Jewish
traditions.

Holy Blood, Holy Grail
Michael Baigent
paperback
"Excellent scholarly work and a thrilling read! When I read
_Holy Blood, Holy Grail_ a few years ago it changed my life and
my entire perception of Christianity. This book is not for the
dogmatic or closed minded, but for those who want an unbiased
look at the Gospels and the life of Jesus."
