out for a walk

i walked through a cloud of you
while out for a stroll tonight
i tasted the air slowly
the cool, damp you that froze my steps

who could have your combination?
clean
tart
real

people and perfumes and pets
cleaning, cooking and cooling
kids riding bikes in the grass
a drink and a smoke
gentle breath on a feather pillow
it's a mix, and it's close
but not enough

so i stand and i breathe
in slow
quiet out
tasting you in the moonlight

'i'll have to give up and move' i thought
'or the neighbors will call the po-lice'

but the wind blew above my head
and i found the gap in the mix

so much you and the night that i never called it by name

October was out for a stroll tonight
on my tongue
in your scent
and it rattled the drying leaves in the trees

faerie and woodsmoke and geese moving south
cleaning, canning and a comfy warm house
kids doing homework in a kitchen
cider and a cigar
a gentle breath under a thick down comforter
days that grow short, twilights that last till the dawn
night air of cool and leaf rustle

i tasted October
when i walked through a cloud of you
out for a stroll tonight
