There was something he didn't know. But that could wait. Right now he was laying bleeding on the sidewalk. He could feel his awareness slipping in and out, and was unaware when the rain stopped. He was numb. He saw a dog trot by, dripping from the rain and dirty, and no doubt heading for home.
'Home' he thought,'I want to go home.' He heard a scream and glanced up to see a middle aged woman standing on the sidewalk, pulling her hair out and shrieking loudly. Instantly, a crowd of people appeared around him. He felt like screaming at them: 'Don't just stand there gawking, get help!' But he couldn't tell them, his lips wouldn't move.
Then they sent a teenage boy running for the pay phone
'Idiots', he thought, 'the boy will freak and run away. Better to send an adult.' But stil he couldn't tell them.
Then, a moment later, he lost his awareness completely as all the world faded completly from his view.
When he opened his eyes, he was on a stretcher with paramedics rushing him through the hospital entrance.
Suddenly, he knew: he was going to die.
Somehow, he wanted to tell them not to waste their energy, it was useless to try saving him now.
As they hurried with him into the ER room and heaved him onto the bed, they knew too.
They left an intern to cover the body.
