Using quickmask and the lasso tools you can select portions of the costume that are different colors, and then save all of the different selections into seperate alpha channels. This makes revisions alot easier.

Another cool thing with layers is that in some of them, a 50% gray fill is nuetral and unrecognized. This means that you can fill a layer with gray, set it to dodge or burn, and use darker or lighter shades of gray to produce the effect on the lower layers, without affecting them. The burns and dodges dont react quite the same as if you apply them directly to the colors themselves, so sometimes it is necessary to use the burn tool directly on the color layer.
