Hakol Over Habibi was one of
the most successful pop group in Israel from the late 70's to late 80's, when they broke
up (actually, the singer of the group, Shlomit Aharon left and started a career on her
own, with a limited success by the way). They remind me of the American group Manhattan
Transfer: pop but yet very jazzy and swinging. Over the years, Hakol Over Habibi got many
hits and I have to say that the voice of Shlomit Aharon did wonders for the compositions.
Shlomit Aharon released two solo albums. The first one is pop and boring (to me) and the
second one is her interpretations of several Israeli standards songs. This album (released
in 1993), entitled "Album Yivri" (Hebrew Album), has a few very
interesting covers of the standards (a mix of heavy dance-rock) but the ensemble is a bit
disappointing because the arrangements for all the songs are more or less the same: the
songs were all treated the same way. Shlomit Aharon has also played in musicals, including
the Israeli version of the Broadway show "Blood Brothers". Recently I
have read that another lead singer was supposed to join the rest of the group and that
Hakol Over Habibi would start again. Well, wait and see! In the meantime, we can
appreciate the great songs that the group did in a few CDs released by Hed Artzi. There is
a very good collection CD and a few other original albums. Actually, it's a pity that
Hakol Over Habibi broke up because their style was very sophisticated! |
