AN INDIAN PRAYER
Many the eve this prayer has offered me great comfort as I lay in my bed watching the stars through my window or reflecting on the reactions that the day has brought forth in me. I only wish I would use the prayer more often when the pain of life hits hard...it works for me...but sometimes I forget that the Great Spirit of the Universe is there for me as a protector and friend whenever I may need to talk.
Though I am not Indian, I have adapted many of their spiritual beliefs in my life - at least some that I have read about. I do not claim to be an expert on Indian traditions however, all I know is that their spiritual belief system makes a whole lot more sense to me than our superficial attempts at christianity in this culture.
Take my heart O Sacred Drum, as I beat upon your window, nigh.
Reflect I will O Sacred one, with wisdom taught from dawning sky.....

O GREAT SPIRIT
O GREAT SPIRIT,
Whose voice I hear in the winds,
Whose breath gives life to all the world,
Hear me.
I come to you for wisdom.
I am small. I am weak.
I need your strength and beauty.
LET ME WALK IN BEAUTY
and make my eyes ever to behold,
the red and purple sunset.
MAKE MY HANDS
respect the things you have made,
and my ears sharp to hear your voice.
MAKE ME WISE
so that I may understand the things,
you teach my people.
LET ME LEARN
the lessons you have hidden,
in every leaf and every rock.
I SEEK STRENGTH
not to be greater than my sister
but to fight my greatest enemy
myself.
MAKE ME ALWAYS READY
to come to you with clean hands and straight eyes,
So that when life fades as the fading sunset,
My spirit may come to you without shame.
