Problematic
A Toolkit for Chess Problemists
Problematic is a toolkit designed to assist chess problemists in the composition and solving of chess problems. It has many interesting and unique features, including a rather unique problem database manager. A lot of effort went into making it fast, and for awhile it was the fastest solver extant (hundreds of times as fast as Chessmaster 3000). Its analysis engine is written entirely in Assembly and the user interface is written in C. It is not a modern program in the sense that it is not written in MFC and therefore does not have the standard Windows interface look and feel. However, it supports a mouse and has an event-driven graphical user interface. It was written to run under DOS but it works fine under Windows 95.
The complete documentation is now online, so you can take a look for yourself at its features. You can also download the program and actually try it out for yourself if you want to. It comes packaged with a database collection of a few hundred classic chess problems. You can also find Problematic at Gambitsoft, a German site, if you experience problems getting it here. Have fun!
