Musical Thoughts - NOM ensemble page

Maurizio Zanetti - Dietrich Faust - Bob Meloccaro

And so......... here we are! The NOM (Not-Obvious-Music) ensemble is an open virtual band of composers devoted to the exploration of the sound-sea edges, in order to produce unexpected brain vibrations.

Currently, the ensemble is built around the above three people, and this page will be updated each time we'll compose a new piece together.

Before presenting our first MIDI work, here is a short biography of the ensemble's members.

Maurizio Zanetti

I talked a lot about me in my homepage.

So I will not bore anyone with additional informations. Just a picture to know my face, that's enough.

(Well, for anybody who cares, I was born in Milano, Italy, in 1958. I'm still alive)

Dietrich Faust

I was born in Kyoto, Japan on 5th December 1970, making me a Sagittarian, moon in Acquarius, Sagittarius rising.

I was born the third child of eight children - seven boys and one girl - and of Australian parents. My parents lived in Japan for eight years from the time of their marriage (1965) before returning to Australia (when I was 2) and filing for a divorce.

I thus have three full brothers, three half brothers and a half sister.....complicated.

I lived with my mother and rowdy siblings until I was 18, in a suburb of Melbourne. As far as I know, I composed my first song when I was about 15, whilst doing my paper round one morning....I still know what it sounds like, although I have never written it down (as is the case with about 100 other songs).

My aim is to one day convey ALL of them to the world....sigh.

I took up composition more seriously when I was about....hmmmm...21??? It is hard for me to say, because I was highly mathematical and scientific for most of my life...but an overseas trip to Europe when I was 18 changed that. In some ways I have come to meld my interests in science with music...to unify the lateral with the logical.

I attended Monash University in Melbourne from the age of 19 to 24, studying materials engineering for two years, before abandoning that for an Arts degree (majoring in German language/literature and music) which I successfully completed in 1994.

I established a business partnership with two friends in 1995 (Web Design and Marketing business) which I have been operating since, hoping to make a lot of money one day. My musical output was at its greatest in about 1995 or 1996, when I completed a number of works including some rather large piano works. I play piano, cornet, drums, guitar (badly) and sing tenor in a choir. My aspiration is to hear some of my orchestral works, played live.

My musical tastes are varied: I love classical music and rock, but I am also keen on jazz & blues. I don't like country and western (AT ALL). My prime classical influences are the following: Beethoven (piano), Mussorgsky ("Pictures at an Exhibition" - the most beautiful musical work ever written), Schubert & Schumann (for their song cycles...thanks guys), Webern, Ives (for their IDEAS!!!). My prime rock influences are: ELP, King Crimson, Supertramp (70's).....Pixies, Nirvana, U2 (90's)....forget the 1980's.

As a person, I am a quiet, intellectual type, who has a "cruel to be kind" streak. I like to get drunk a lot and I like to party hard. I like to debate, I like music, physics, literature, computers, mathematics and helicopters. I like to talk about myself a lot, as I have just proven (Then.....who doesn't).

Bob Meloccaro

Born October 9,1959 in Providence R.I.(not too far from of N.Y.C. for those of you from outside the USA) I'm the oldest child of 5 (two brothers and two sisters all overachievers relatively speaking for almost any family)

So I, being the Black Sheep of my Family decided to rebel in the way that would be the most consistent for a kid bought up in a socially affluent family, I TRADED IT IN FOR SEX AND DRUGS AND ROCK N ROLL! My parents just were delighted with my career choice I must say ! I decided this Jem of an Idea at a very young age when I realized all the alternatives involved work ! So.......

This leaves me with 29 yrs playing experience with the guitar as my main axe but also I play of keys, trombone, clarinet, sax, drums, bass some of these a little more convincingly than others.

Also much to my dismay, after an education at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, Mass USA (a world renowned Music school) I found out Music too involved work! I could have been a lawyer for the amount of work that I ended up doing without I may add the compensation financially.(however at least I do not have to suffer those hideous lawyer jokes)

I got involved with Midi in the late 70's when it came out never dreaming that it was going to become it's present day monolith and I'm ashamed to say I could and should have evolved with it however, I did not get caught up with computers and the like until a few yrs ago. I'm amazed how far things have come! Now I use calkwalk Pro Audio 8 (6 at the recording of the first NOM project) a NEC 200 Mhz MMX computer W\98megs of RAM Whoopie!(It was something 2 1/2 yrs ago.) That go's to show ya how fast this stuff becomes obsolete! and a AWE 64gold soundcard at the time of the first project (assuming there will be others soon ). Now I've upgraded my Audio end of things with Gina by Event electronics. However I still use the AWE for Midi (the soundfonts show promise) and a myriad of other soft and hardware.

I'm now engaged to be married (God help me) to my better half. I have 2 children (God help them) and work mainly as a music teacher and Jingle writer for my own Company Paradigm Shift Music Co.

E- mail "bobmelo1@concentric.net"  ( For anyone who might need a Jingle or guitar Lessons in the area  :-)

Here below, we're proud to present our compositions.

NOTE: To allow a good compatibility with current MIDI equipment, you will always find two versions :

> one for GM/GS sound equipments (optimized for Roland SC)

> one for AWE64 Gold users (to be used with the standard soundfont  GMREV35C.SF2 .... please load it)

 ToLoose LowTrack

(Ok, Ok..... there is only one composition up to now, so what? Stay tuned... the revolution is just started!)
