How to make a homepage
By following the steps listed here a person can create their
own personal homepage; a person can put their mark on
the world wide web. On their homepages people can write
whatever they want, put any picture they want anywhere
they want, and put whatever else they want on their
page, on their page. Therefore, not only is a homepage
a good way to reach people, but it also is a good
place for the open exchange of ideas and opinions.
The first step in the process is getting space on the
world wide web. Many companies and individuals pay
around $25 a month to receive their own domain name;
which means their URL is www.theirname.com/. However,
the individual can get 2 MB of free space on the
Internet by signing up for free membership through
Geocities,
Angelfire
, or Tripod.
The URL for that individual is assigned. Some URLs
contain the member name the individual chooses.
The next step is to do the html for the page. Html is
a programming language that the browser understands and
converts into pictures and text placed on the page. It
is simply written into separate documents which are
saved on the server and viewed when a certain URL is
typed in. There are places on the Internet that can
teach an individual how to create html documents for a
dynamic homepage. One of the best sites for html help
is html goodies. It contains
information on how to do anything you could ever want
to do on your page.
A homepage can be created without knowing HTML if a
person uses a program that does the HTML for you.
Programs such as Microsoft Frontpage have been made to
make it easy to make a page without knowing any HTML.
You just put the picture where you want it and the
program does all the HTML programming for you. However,
these programs usually cost around $125.
The final step is to let others know about your
homepage. This is done by signing up for different
search engines, such as yahoo and
webcrawler, and by e-mailing your
friends and giving them your URL so that they may view
your page. The more you tell people about your page,
more viewers your page will receive.
When this process is complete, especially if it was
successful, it leaves a feeling of accomplishment in
the creator. It gives them the satisfaction of knowing
their creation can be seen by millions around the world
and that their viewpoints can be heard.
