Wiccan words

Alter-- Place on which to set Wiccan tools during rites, and offerings of flowers etc.

Athame-- Wiccan ritual knife. Usually has a double-edged blade and a black handle. The athame is used to direct Personal power during ritual workings. It is seldom used for actual physical cutting, and probably shouldn't be.

Bell--The bell is feminine in symbol and so is oftn used to invoke the Goddess in ritual. It is also rung to ward off evil spells and spirits, to halt storms, or to evoke good energies. Bells are sometimes rung in ritual to mark various sections and to signal a spell's beginning or end.Any type of bell can be used. (I even use a large brass candle holder, that rings better than any bell, as I see it)

Besom-(broom) a branch from a tree of your choice (keep in mind, different wood has different properties), and perhaps some dried Fennel, or Rosemary for the actual broom part, and use willow binding (if you can). The broom is mostly used to purify areas, and even the whole house itself, especially at Ostara.

Bolline--The white-handled knife is simply a practical, workng knife as opposed to the purely ritualisitic magick knife. It is used to cut wands or sacred herbs, inscribe symbols onto candles or on wood, clay or wax and in cutting cords for use in magic.

Book of Shadows--is a book (notebook, or whatever you want) containing invocations, ritual patterns, spells, runes, rules governing magic etc. Believe me, you will need to make one. In fact, you may already have one started, from printing off info. from various Wicca pages...

Calling Quarters--Calling forth spirits of earth from the North, air from the east, fire from the South, and water from the west.

Casting a circle-- making a sacred space in which to work safely, keep power in, and create a "portal" into the spirit world in which to be with the Goddess and the God.

Cauldron--The cauldron is the container in which magical transformations occur. The wicca see the cauldron as a symbol of the Goddess, the manifested essence of fertility. It is also sybolic of water.During rites it is filled with fresh water and flowers, during winter a fire may be kindles withinthe cauldron to represent the returning heat and light of the Sun (the god) from the cauldron( the goddess) This links in with agricultural myths wherein the God is born in winter, reaches maturity in summer, and dies after the last harvest. It can be used for scrying. Any size can be used (again, mine is small enough to fit in a drawer and brass)

Charge-- to "pour" power into something you want charged with your energy. you can charge stones, candles, poppets--almost anything. to charge something, hold it in your hands and concentrait on it. you may want to repeat your purpose over and over silently or aloud and visualize what you are wanting to accomplish, imagine this "going into" the candle, rock, ect.

Coven--group of Wiccans who gather for celebrations on days of power (sabbats and esbats). They dance, sing, eat, pray, and do rituals at the gatherings.

Crone--1 of three aspects of the Goddess. She is the Goddess symbolizing the end of life, therefore, she controls death and wisdom, of people, and of ideas.

Deosil--moving clock-wise around the circle (usually to cast it)

Esbats--full moon celebrations. Since the moon is the symbol of the goddess and her power, she only is usually worshipped at esbats. Wiccans often practice magic then, tapping into larger amounts of power available at this time.

God--The god is symbolized as the sun. He is revered as the source of all life. He is the tender of wild animals. As the Horned God he is sometimes seen wearing horns on his head, symbolizing his connection with these beasts. With the Goddess, he also celebrates and rules sex. The wicca Don't avoid sex or speak of it as if it were a "sin". It's a beautiful part of nature, and is accepted as such.It is sacred. Some of the God's creatures are: bull, dog, snake, fish, stag, dragon, wolf, boar, eagle, falcon, shark, lizard etc.

Goddess--universal mother. source of fertility, endless wisdom and loving caresses. Wiccans know her in three aspects: the maiden, the Mother, and the Crone. Symbolized in the waxing, full and waning of the moon. Her creatures are varied and numerous: rabbit, bear, owl, cat, dog, bat, goose, cow, dolphin, lion, horse, wren scorpion, spider, and bee etc.

Incense burner(or censer)--incense is used in rituals. It represents the element of air.

Maiden--first of three apects of the Goddess--before she has been smitten by the god.

Mother--second of three aspects of the Goddess, after coupling with the god.

Pentacle--Flat peice of brass, gold silver, wood, wax or clay, inscribed with certain symbols. the most common, and most necessary, is the pentagram, the five-pointed star which has been used in magic for millenia. The pentacle is used to put apon: amulets, charms or other objects to be ritually consecrated. It's five points stand for: earth, fire, water, air, and spirit.

Poppet-- a doll made from just about anything from an apple, to a cloth doll, that is made to represent someone. poppets can be made like a "voodoo doll" to hurt someone, or they may be made to help someone. they have also been made to represent the Goddess and/or God in ceremonies.
Sabbats--solar rituals marking points of sun's yearly cycle.

Wand--It can be used to call the Goddess and the God, direct energy, point toward danger while perfectly blnce on the witch's palm or arm, or even to stir brew in a cauldron. You can make it your own, like everything else, paint it and carve in it and put feathers and things on it, or leave it plain off the tree.

Widdershins--going counterclockwise around the circle (usually to disperse it)
