The Fat Man in History

This months selection is a book of short stories by acclaimed
australian writer Peter Carey author
of such gems as Jack
Mags the accompanying novel to Charles Dickens piece "Great Expectations"
and the award winner Oscar and Lucinda, which is soon to hit the movie
screens starring Ralph Fiennes.
This book is an utter delight of the infamous "what ifs" . What if society
suddenly turned into a marxist type institution and to be fat was considered
a moral sin ? What if aliens made it possible to change ones looks through
a lottery , you gamble and you might become devastatingly beautiful or
unbelievably ugly. What type of people would choose to become ugly ? What
kind of person would a mime that could mime "terror" be ? How far would
people go if they found a bird that by its stroke would give utter joy
. What would it be like if things started to disappear because no one loves
them ? These and many more are all
part of "The Fat Man in History" experience. After
the first story , I must say , I was hooked and could not put down the
book until I was finish. I was compelled from the start . Peter
Carey's didactic form of writing leaves
one breathless and amused to the highest levels of the literary senses.
