Baby Steps

Genny is walking.

She hangs onto furniture for dear life and then sees someone she loves, like Mom or Dad, she teeters to welcoming arms.

We can't ever get good pictures of this. We've tried repeatedly and invariably fate conspires against us. Lately, I've been wishing for a video camera.

She's so damned cute.

Evidence of Genny Cuteness:

  1. She loves music so much that when she hears it she starts bopping around to it and dancing. She even started rocking out to her jingle ball. She really loves this squeezable Winnie-the-Pooh doll, that Pauline gave her. She holds it and rocks back and forth all the time.
  2. She can climb on and off the couch all by herself. Tonight, when Daddy was trying to give her a hug and she wanted Mommy, she climbed off Daddy's lap and pushed his hand out of the way, so she could come to mommy. Then she walked a couple steps to Mommy.
  3. Genny doesn't like baby food. She wants what's on your plate, thank you very much. And she's definitely Daddy's girl, because this evening, when given the choice between carrots and peas and chicken, she chose chicken.
  4. Ticklishness, followed by chortles. Enough said.

Oh, and I actually exercised today.

I walked with family in tow for about an hour. During that hour, we stopped a lot because I was showing Russell some basic plant identification on this trail near the house and we'd hit a dry spot for a couple hours, so we were warming benches now and again.

At first, Russell started bitching about having to walk. I was furious. We'd taken him out with us for pizza and video games, i.e., done things he wanted and then he started whining about going on a walk. I let him have it.

I told him that I've gained nearly all my weight back and that my diabetes is getting worse because of it and that the one thing I can do about that is exercise. My food isn't great, but it doesn't suck either, but exercise is the singlemost effective means for me to lose weight, manage my disease and generally have energy.

I explained that the only time I have in a week to exercise is on the weekend and that Daddy and I like to walk together and that if we have to walk together, he has to come with his sister. Tough shit, kid.

I burned calories today. I took a swing at my disease today. We'll see what tomorrow brings.
