Yesterday was officially Phone Day, as St. Valentine never had a car accident. I tried all day long to reach the insurance adjuster to no avail. Turns out, she called my work, left a message that said she'd call me at home, and she never did and then of course, she went on vacation for a week starting today. Please shoot me. Then I called the garage and let our mechanic know about the car. Turns out that the tire will have to be replaced, there's some body work and the rear alignment will have to be checked as well. Hs taking care of the body and alignment stuff today. I did get a rental car yesterday. After getting the keys to a brand new Dodge Neon, both Mike and I laughed and agreed that we should have a car wreck more often. It's nice to be driving a new car with only 8000 miles or so on it and that doesn't show the rigors of child rearing on its upholstery. We've also been talking about that because it is roomier than our car that when we go to buy a new car next year, that it might be a good car to start with because it is pretty large and spacious and would be good for fitting all of us, including all 6'7" of Mike with a child behind him. I called the adjuster's number again this morning and discovered that she's on vacation for a week, so got ahold of someone else covering her desk in her absence. I've got a Plan now. You know how important it is to a Virgo to have a Plan. I've got to get the body guy to take pictures of the car. I've got to pick up a copy of the police report and fax it to the insurance company. I've got to call the D.A. to see about what's necessary for getting any financial losses recouped. It's not much of a Plan, but it's a start. And at least I have somewhere to go now, rather than spinning in space wondering what's next. The other thing that was totally awesome? The insurance company said that if the other woman didn't have insurance that as a courtesy they will pay the $500 deductible. That made me melt in relief. My mother called this morning to say she's sent the $500 check to cover that deductible. On one hand I felt bad about putting her out, but on the other hand, she was sending it anyhow, so it will end up being money towards the baby, which is what it had been earmarked for anyway. I'll be sitting on it anyhow to make sure we don't need it until the insurance stuff is cleared up, but this is a good start to things. My attorney in typical attorney fashion asked about the accident because I had an appointment about my will yesterday and I told him about it. He told me to not sign off on things until after the baby was born and she was ok. He also told me that any financial restitution would probably come from the DA, and I asked the insurance company about that and they agreed. He also thought I should pursue money for pain and suffering, but if the woman is uninsured, it's probably because she can't afford it and I'd feel bad doing that. I know I've been hurting and not feeling good, but I can deal with it as long as I'm not hurting after the baby and the baby's ok. I guess I need to know more before I make a choice about that. My insurance company said for the uninsured motorists' insurance that there is a pain and suffering thing, but again, I just don't know. I'm afraid to take the chance of raising my rates. I need to go get the police report, so that's next on the agenda du jour. But at least I have a plan now. |
