In-laws

On Saturday morning, we drove up to see Mike's grandparents, knowing that they wanted to see Genevieve and hopefully, Russell.

On the way, we kept smelling this weird sulfur smell and we finally stopped for gas and lifted the hood. To our surprise and horror, there was fluid on the top of the battery-- bubbling, i.e., sulfuric acid. We found a K-Mart with an auto repair place and they checked everything, refilled the battery and did it all for free. Everything had seemed fine, so we played the radio, ran the A/C and got up to "the mountains" as we call it in our family.

Unfortunately, they primarily ignored Russell and paid lots and lots of attention to Genevieve without acknowledging his existence much. And when they weren't holding her, I was nursing her, so to Russell's eyes, she was getting a lot of attention from his people and he wasn't.

At one point, Grammy explained to someone,"Oh, this is my first great grandchild." And this while Bear was standing right there and I said,"Your second, Grammy." To which she smiled and replied,"Oh, that's right, my second." And then we were out walking to the car and I mentioned how excited Russell was about having all this new family, since Mike and I got married. I think it's them just getting used to the idea that Mike and I are married, but it's hard on Bear.

Then we got in the car and drove down the hill to the next town, but as we drove, the car started acting up. We drove to the next town because we knew that Grampa would be there, and we talked to him about what could be wrong, etc. We left the car running with the lights, radio and A/C on, so we could if it would make it down the mountain. Then we ate lunch at Chris' cafe. He's opened up some kind of grill thing on the river below a bike shop. It looks kind of dumpy, so I don't think it will be terribly successful. He said that he's got steady traffic, but the day we were there, I figured he probably was only getting $40/hr gross, or so, and that's not enough really. And he made a tri-tip sandwich that was good, but the meat was too tough to be in a sandwich.

Of course, when he was talking about Fourth of July, I opened my big mouth and suggested he might want to do hot dogs or something, and he said he was doing fajitas with a rather annoyed tone. I said something about that would probably be good to offer something different, because Grammy mentioned that he probably didn't want to do hamburgers because the Lion's Club would be doing that. I just was wishing I could have shut up sooner.

Overall, it went pretty well. Grammy tried to take her smoking elsewhere, but she was chain smoking mornings in the kitchen which was wafting into the bedroom and waking both Gen and I up. Next time, I know to take a fan, so I can blow the smoke back down the hall.

A realtor showed the place on Monday, so Mike and I spent a couple of hours on Sunday dusting and cleaning things up for Grammy. She was quite thrilled and it looked a lot better. What she really needs is a week's vacation and a maid service to come in daily while she's gone. It's so dusty in there. I should talk of course. I came home to Hurricane Harbor at my house. You sure could tell we left in a great big hurry.

I start work tomorrow. And I've got so much housework to do. *sigh*

I may not be able to get into work tomorrow, but I'll be doing my best to get there. I'm just hoping Doug has the car fixed by then. *thumb twiddle*
