THE POTENTIAL DIVIDER
By using two resistors in parallel the voltage across the two is split, such that the the voltage across the first resistor, V1 = [ R1 / (R1 + R2 ) ] V. If the other resistor is a variable one the the voltage across the resistor will be controlable.
