What is a lady?

Not a housewife?

A lady, my grandmother told me, always carries a nice, smallish ironed handkerchief about her person, wears good shoes and does not enter into conversations about sex, politics or religion with persons strange to her.

Grandmother held that you can tell a lady by her shoes. She was not wrong, either. For six important years I did not wear shoes at all. Alas, someone then said " oh, so you like your new promotion?" all innocence, as their eyes travelled to my feet. I had to grow up:)

My current postion does not require the wearing of shoes, Of course!

I almost get frostbite whenever I do pad around the kitchen barefoot.
