My daily routine and Form of Work
ABSTRACT: This paper is about the routine that I follow most days - - but no two days are ever alike.
I get up each weekday (and very often on weekends too) anywhere
between 0630 and 0715. I go to the kitchen to prepare breakfast
(which is the most important meal of the day for me) for Bob
and me: Bob's is almost always the same: toast, coffee, orange
juice and some form of jam or marmalade ot peanut butter; mine
is variable as I am no longer eating an egg every day - I am
down to three or four a week. On egg days that are also
weekdays, (Tuesdays and Thursdays), I have either a poached
egg, or scranbled egg, or soft boiled egg. On the other days,
sardines fill the bill. Every day I have bacon, one slice
cooked in the microwave oven. On Saturdays, French toast (or
egg toast) - bread soaked in a mixture of egg and milk, then
fried. Sundays are highly variable.
After breakfast I make Bob a lunch of cheese and raw vegetables
(celery and turnip) and cookies or fruit for desert. Then I go
to my basement office and read my e-mail. Depending on how I
feel, I may do "useful" work, which earns me money, or "fun"
work, that does not do more than interest me. When I do earn
money, it is only rarely that I write computer programs:
primarily I oversee the programming activities of my
programming staff (mostly 1, sometimes 2) or else write
reports, or papers for presentation. My field of expertise is
computer security and in particular, these days, the more
specific area of Risk Analysis. My programming staff is
developing a Windows product that is a replacement for an older
DOS version; this product is called RiskWatch. I went to New
Zealand as a representative of Canada for the military
establishement in this technical area. I think I can say,
without a trace of modesty. that I am one of the most
knowledgeable specialists in this area in the world (if not the
foremost authority).
My fun tasks are much more eclectic: I plan meals and I cook.
I occasionally play my piano. I write papers, mostly for my own
amusement, that I call DAB Notes (since my initials are D A B).
I think about genetics, the human genotype etc; about glyphs;
about Chinese calendars and the ways man has recorded and kept
track of the passage of time; about patterns, especially
non-figurative ones such as those favoured by the Moslems, and
more particularly those called "rills" that go around things
(like plates, tops of walls under the ceiling, or handkerchiefs
or wall hangings); about dirty jokes, pictures, and other means
of stimulating me and giving me intense orgasms from
masturbation; about computerizing the many aspects of my life -
an art collection, a book collection, my family tree, and my
collection of video-tapes- using EXCEL from Microsoft; and
about the many pen-pals I have had (and mostly lost) from
around the world. Almost always my mornings are punctuated with
at least one JO session.
After lunch, I am again at work on one of my computers or
another. Again writing, pictures, data entry, or other such
tasks form the basis of the day. Of course I go out from time
to time, to the store to shop, to the bank, to visit my
programmer, to have lunch downtown with friends, to visit the
"fun" spots in Ottawa (mostly the nearer of the two gay
bath-houses), or to swim at the local swimming pool and take a
sauna there. My days are always different, and the very
absence of a real routine is something that I enjoy.
Bob comes home about 1815; we eat supper and do things (like
his accounting, or he paints in watercolours while I write
letters on the computer, or we watch TV). He goes out with me
some evenings for exercise at the pool. Bedtime is anywhere
from 2130 to 2330 depending on how we feel.
