"FIRE ANGEL"

Jonny stared at the paper in disgust. For hours, he'd been trying to
write a special Valentine for Jessie since none of the pre-packaged
affection at Hallmark seemed to say just what he wanted to tell her. Now,
the paper, still white as moonlight, almost seemed to laugh at him.
"My friend, you look as if the paper was Jeremiah Surd himself. What is
the matter?" Hadji's voice startled him out of his reverie.
"I can't get started on Jess's Valentine," he complained.
"Perhaps the simplest approach is best, Jonny. Why don't you simply
tell her how you feel?"
"Easy for you to say," Jonny muttered. Still...
Hours later, he looked up from the paper in a daze. Nine-thirty! And
he still had math to do! Then he looked down. Had he really written all
that? He picked up the page and read the words he couldn't even remember
writing.

Jessie read the words again to make sure she'd seen them correctly.
*Jonny wrote this?* she thought, amazed. The same Jonny she roughhoused
with when they did the dishes together was capable of THIS? *Learn
something new every day.* She laughed...but as she tucked the Valentine
carefully into the box where she kept her most secret treasures, she
couldn't deny that her heart was soaring.
Her father glared as she came down the steps clinging to Jonny's arm,
but Benton stopped him. "Take it easy, Race. After all, look at the
calendar..."
