JQ:HRA VALENTINES
After All...

When Jonny Quest reached the observation deck, he found that
someone else had had the same idea.
Jessie Bannon sat on the edge of the deck, her red hair
fiery in the starlight. She turned as she heard Jonny approach,
and gave him a small smile.
"Hi," he said.
"Hi," she replied. She shifted over, making room for him.
He sat down beside her.
They sat in silence for a long moment.
"Nice night for stargazing," Jessie finally said.
"Uh-huh," Jonny replied. "See anything interesting?"
He saw her eyes flicker to the road leading to the Quest
compound.
"Not really," she said.
"Waiting up for Race?" Jonny asked innocently.
She started, and then turned to face him. She looked
guilty. "Yeah." She looked at her watch. "It's 11.30. Where
could he be?"
Jonny rested his elbows on his knees, and then his chin on
his hands. "I wonder where Dad is."
Jessie imitated his posture. Suddenly, she laughed. "I
can't believe this!"
Jonny turned to her. "What?"
"We're waiting up for our dads like - like we're them!"
Jonny laughed. "I guess we are."
"I mean, it's really none of our business whether they go
out on dates or not, right?" Jessie went on.
"Yeah. They're grown men, they don't need us to worry about
them," Jonny added.
"We don't have to wait for them," Jessie said.
"Right," Jonny agreed.
They lapsed into silence again.
"I can't believe he's on a date," Jessie muttered, her eyes
fixed on the road.
Jonny stayed silent. He knew that Jessie had accepted her
parents' divorce, but he also knew her secret wish that her
parents would reconcile.
He himself was not entirely comfortable with the idea of his
father dating. "I can't believe he's forgotten her already," he
said out loud before he realized it.
Jessie turned. "Who?"
Jonny shrugged. "You know. Mom," he explained. "I thought
- ah, heck..."
Jessie put a hand on his shoulder and squeezed it in silent
sympathy. Another long silence ensued.
"After all, it _is_ Valentine's Day," she said at last.
"I guess," Jonny answered reluctantly. "So what are we
doing up _here_?"
Jessie suddenly smiled. "I think I saw a new pint of Rocky
Road in the freezer."
Jonny perked up. "And there's an all-night monster movie
marathon on Sci-Fi."
"Why, Jonny, is this a date?" Jessie teased.
Jonny grinned and shrugged again. "After all, it _is_
Valentine's Day..."
