Part Three

*********

Remy and Jered walked in silence down the road to Tuntar. An hour ago,
they had eaten the meal Sophie had prepared for them. The food looked like
fruit but tasted of various things. Some tasted like meat, pasta, and one
even reminded him of chocolate. A truly satisfying meal, regaining his
strength after suffering from hunger for three days!

As they walked, Remy stared at the sword that Jered had kindly lent him.
The steel glistened in the sunlight, beautifully polished, with a design on
the blade. The handle was stunning, it appeared to be made of gold. He
coudn't set his eyes off it, although he had no previous training in sword
fighting.

Remy smiled as he dug in his pouch and took out some stones and pebbles he
had grabbed from the ground back at the forest. (Even though de sword
might not be too effective, dese stones, kinetically charged dat is, can
act as weapons.)

"So mon ami, you and de nymph have a relationship?" Remy asked, trying to
make conversation.

"Well, yes." Jered replied "It started off as a mutual service towards each
other, I protect her and she feeds me. But we slowly got close."

Remy reflected back to himself and Rogue. He ignored the thought after a
moment and got back to the topic. "Don't mind me sayin' dis, but nymphs
and talkin' trees are nonexistent where I come from. Dese fairies are just
from fairy tales, you know, to read to de little ones."

Jered nodded. "No fairies? No talking trees? It seems like you came from
another world. But I grew up in Tuntar Empire."

"What is dis Tuntar Empire?"

Jered smiled. "You don't know about Tuntar? Have you been living in a cave?!"

Remy cleared his throat. "I dunno. But I certainly have never heard of a
Tuntar Empire."

"Tuntar Empire is the capital of the Mystic Continient. Everything else
out of our bubble field is destroyed and anyone who lives out there would
probably die in hours!" Jered warned.

"What do you mean by 'bubble field' mon ami?" Remy asked.

"Two centuries ago, a meteor landed on earth, all advanced civilizations
had been destroyed. The kingdoms lead sorcerer, Nostrat, created a magic
barrier that would protect this land from the outside world. All is barren
and the weather is chaos beyond the barrier."

Remy was fascinated by this story. Surely, he was starting to believe he
was in the future. Advanced civilations? This place looked like they are
not to updated with their technology, maybe he had traveled into the
future? But how?

Remy didn't know what to say, and thought it would be best to remain
silent. How confused he was, what had happened that night in the alley?

They walked for quite a while. The forest was getting thicker around the
road. The overhead view had grown dense as to let only silvers of sunlight
show through. Remy was nervous about this, not sure what monsters might
attack them, but Jered seemed unconcerened. Since he knew this land much
better than Remy did, he was reassured.

During mid-afternoon, they had stopped to eat some pieces of bread and some
fresh water from the stream that they had passed several hours ago.

(Dis is more like it!) Remy thought to himself.

Jered offered him another piece of bread, Remy pushed it away gently. "No
need for more mon ami. I am satisfied as it is."
Jered had taken out a reed whistle from his pouch and began to play music.
It sounded like the same music he had heard when he awakened this morning.

(So it hadn't been Sophie after all!)

Jered stopped playing, he dropped the whistle to the floor and grabbed his
gun. "Draw your sword Remy," Jered whispered "We are in danger!"

Quickly, Remy stood upand reached back to draw his weapon. Something was
wrong. Remy suddenly saw figures crawling out of the ground and charging
toward them from a small hill.

"Trolls!" Jered screamed. He had already shot one of the creatures with a
bullet. "Remy, be weary of your surroundings! The trolls are sneaky and
could appear from anywhere!"

Remy listened to him. He grabbed the sword with both hands, feeling
rather awkward. They were vile-looking creatures, each about the size of a
small man, with lump gray skin, huge callused hands, and a disfigured lump
with brown teeth and red eyes for a head. If they had been thugs, perhaps
he would have had a better notion what to do. (How do I fight dese ugly
looking hommes?!)

Jered shot another. Soon, however, he would be in trouble, as the trolls
were coming too close to combat effectively with a gun. There were about 7
in all. Remy jolted out of his horrified trance, he couldn't let his
friend be overrun!

Remy charged forward toward the ugly bests, leading with his sword. The
first troll jumped through the air, and Remy easily lifted his blade,
impaling the monstrous body upon it. Dark greeb blood flowed across the
weapon as the troll died. Remy lowered the point, the hulk slid off.

Another gripped Remy's hand and used his strength to slowly crush it.
Remy, feeling the pain slowly increase, grabbed a stone and kinetically
charged it. The troll looked puzzled, Remy threw the pebble down his
throat, he jumped back, feeling his throat. Suddenly, the troll's head
exploded, drops of blood landed on Remy's face. (Dis is sick.)

Glancing to his side, Remy saw Jered holding off two trolls with a dagger.
He was truly an expert fighter.

There was no time to get sick. Two more trolls were coming to him. Remy
swung at the next, who had a heavy wooden club.

The club connected with the sword and broke it in half! (Mon dieu! What
power dis guy has.) For a moment all Remy as aware of was the numbness of
his hand.

Then a troll charged into him and knocked him onto his back. He managed to
do a judo throw, outsmarting the clumsy troll. The one with the club
slowly lifted it in the air, and hurled it towards Remy's face. He quickly
rolled to his side.

THUD!
(Dat was a close one!) Remy rolled over once more and got to his feet. He
grabbed a stone and smiled at him. The troll stepped back, remembering
what happened to his friend. "Gozarch Manoo!" the troll screamed.

Remy charged the stone and threw it towards the troll, a burst followed.
BOOM!
The smoke blocked the scene, once it cleared, Remy saw that the troll lying
on the ground, his chest could be seen to the bone.

Remy looked towards Jered, who had apparently dispatched all but one troll.
Fighting him off with a dagger. Remy looked about and saw his broken
sword on the ground, he figured the pieces of broken steel attached to the
handle can still kill it. He ran to fetch it and picked it up. He chaged
towards Jered's attacker.

Hearing his approach, the troll began to jump back. Remy did not hesitate
but threw the broken sword, like a dart, towards the troll. Sucesfully, it
had stabbed through the beast's stomach, dark blood spouted, and it pitched
over, groaning one last time.

All was quiet. Remy stared at Jered, as Jered did the same. "How did you
know dey were comin'?" Remy asked.
"I possess a heightened sixth sense," Jered explained "Call it an alarm if
you will."

Remy paused for a moment. Jered looked at the fallen trolls, the flies
started to gather. "Let us go," Jered said briskly. "We must find Tuntar
quickly, the sun will set in a few hours."

"Right mon ami."

They walked on until they reached a path that came to the top of a hill,
the sun had just set by then. The other side of the hill dropped off into
a huge valley, and in this valley was a city.

The city was awesome. The streets were red cobblestone, the stone houses
had thatched roofs, and standing out for all to see in the center was an
enormous castle. The castle had gray stone walls topped by bright red
parapets, and on top of all four towers were white flags with red emblems.

"What do de emblems represent?" Remy asked.

"I haven't been here in awhile," Jered said. "But I know that the flags
show that it is the capital of the Mystic Continient. Whether they mean
something more than that, I don't know."

"Where do we go homme?"

"There." Jered pointed to the castle.

That was what Remy hoped and feared. He still did not know know what this
was about, but that castle looked important, and that was encouraging--and
alarming.

Slowly and carefully they descended into the valley. Remy had to slow down
to help Jered, whose legs were injured from the fight. "You sure you can
handle de way down?"
"I'm fine Remy." he said reluctantly.

As they reached ground level and walked through the town, Remy had noticed
the townsmen staring. "Why are dey staring at me like dat?" Remy
whispered to Jered.

"My friend, you are unique." Jered continued. "Not only do you possess
some sort of magic, but your fashion and your appearance are slightly
different from most of the townsmen."

"Is dat bad?"

"Not at all."

Soon enough the huge castle towered before them. It was surrounded by a
moat which they had not seen from the ravine. There was a rather large
creature with even larger teeth swimming in it. Jered signaled to Remy,
and they walked to another side. Here there was a lowered drawbridge, with
two guards armed with swords.

It turned out to be no ceremonial post. The guards were alert, and they
moved immediately to block the way. "What business do you have with His
Majesty?" one demanded, while the other stood back with his hand holding
his sword.

"This man may be a Chosen," Jered responded.

(Eh? Chosen?!) Remy thought.

"A what?" Remy asked, thinking he had misheard.

Jered did not answer. The guards, tough and experienced as they evidently
were, seemed incredulous. One of them reached into an alcove in the
drawbridge housing and brought out a box. "Hold out your hand," he said,
in a firm tone.

Remy did not trust this. He did not move.

"Do it," Jered said tightly.

Remy slowly extended a hand. The guard held the box under it. He then
waved his hand over Remy's. There was a tingling sensation, and Remy's
forefinger began to bleed. Only a drop welled out, but that was amazing,
there was no cut! The dropp fell into the box and turned white.

The guard blinked, rather puzzled. "It's true!" he exclaimed.

"I thought it might be," Jered said. "That's why I brought him here."

The guard recovered from his surprise. "Now you," he said to Jered.

"Oh, I'm only his guide!" he protested. "When I thought he might be a
Chosen, I had to bring him immediately. Anyone would have. As soon as I
see him safely settled, I will return to my home."

"I don't care who you are," the guard said. "I am required to test anyone
who might be a Chosen." He held out the box.

"Do it," Remy said, with half a smile.

Jered shrugged and put out his hand. A drop of red blood welled out
similarily, and fell to the box. It had also turned white.

"Thank heaven the last are here," the rear guard whispered, impressed.

One of the guards spun about. "Please, follow me, Chosen Ones."

The two men stared at each other for a moment. "Shall we mon ami?"

"Sure, why not." Jered replied.

The two men followed the guard inside the castle.
