I am just sad to see how many people have actually left South Africa. I am a Rotary Exchange Student living in France for one year and I have only 11 weeks left of my year left.I live in Lyon and I have travelled all around France , but I still can't forg

What a nice surprise to find your website. I will definitely be visiting it regularly from now on. We have been living in the US (greater Detroit area) for the past 9 months and haven't met any South Africans here yet. We know of one couple in the Troy
area and need to arrange a get together. We miss SA terribly (family and friends) but are unsure as to whether we want to go back. We are here on a two year contract and we plan to apply for our green card at the end of the year as we would like to have

Great stuff! I left SA (Durban) at age 11. Went back for the first time in 1996 after 48 years. Wow! Travelled 11,000 kms. in 1 month. Also up to Windhoek, Namibia to see my daughter teaching high school there as a volunteer.
Met an old buddy in Durban who showed me my old nursery and primary schools. Still going strong. What memories! I wrote 2 articles in Zerf News about my travels.

I am back again on the Mandela "good riddance" statement.
I visited South Africa in February and what amazed me that some members of my family would blame the
ANC for all inconveniences they experienced in their daily life. My niece was blasting away at the ANC for the fact that her husband, a doctor, was robbed 3 times in Mitchells Plain. It came to
pass that he was robben BEFORE the ANC came into
power. At that time I felt that if my niece and her husband left South Africa it would be "good riddance" to them.
Mandela has been provoked into commenting on the
emigration of whites. I would consider the revolution a failure if the status quo remained
and we had no emigration. Do you want to bring
back the pass law and send all "surplus Bantus" who cannot find jobs to the "homelands" so that the cities can be safe for the select few.
Here is a Reuter newsitem on Mandela's statement.
He never used the word "bad rubbish". You need to post a correction to maintain your credibility.
Pehaps a correction to the Toronto Star would also
be in order.

'Real South Africans' are staying in the country - Mandela
Washington - President Nelson Mandela on Wednesday renewed his attack on South Africans who leave their homeland because of rampant crime, condemning them as unpatriotic.
"Those who have not got the courage and the patriotism to remain in their country - Let them go!" Mandela declared during a news conference at the end of a visit to Washington. "It is good riddance!"
He said in the process it would establish who was a "real South African."
Mandela first attacked the many South Africans who are choosing to leave in the face of a wave of violent crime in a speech to the Southern African Development Community on September 13 in Mauritius.
He said fear of crime was mainly a white preoccupation, fomented by a mainly white-owned press, whereas previously black and coloured areas had been the main victims of violent crimes.
He drew sharp criticism from some quarters, including newspaper editorials and opposition parties, who said the government's aim should be to eradicate crime, not attack those who felt hounded by it.
Mandela said on Wednesday: "Those who say: This is our country, we will die in our country. We will work with other South Africans black and white to ensure that our country solves these problems," these were the "real South Africans".
"The real South Africans are remaining in the country," he said.

I would like to correct you on your report on Mandela and his reference to emigrating "Whites".
Whenver "whites" emigrate the press and the opposition parties blame the ANC.
With these repeated criticism Mandela made a
statement in Mauritius earlier this year where
he stated that emigration of "whites" is
"SORTING OUT THE COUNTRY". He has stood by this
statement in Canada. He did not say "good riddance".
When Italians emigrate the opposition press in that country does not have a knee jerk reaction of
blaming the Government.
I have discussed Mandela's statement with some other pro ANC members and some disagree with him.
I believe that as we are living in this Global Village, planet Earth, them emigration and immigration will continue.

well done. nothing like this in oz. there was a reunion of sa ca's in sydney last night and i was chatting to a guy who had been in ontario for 5 years prior to coming to oz. interesting to compare the lifestyles.
i spoke to a seventeen year old girl today from cape town. they are now doing their accountancy on the floor of the school room as they share classes with the std 6's

I saw you letter in the Tribune again.
Congrats on your Website, I think it's great to hear from other South Africans in Canada.
The crime problem, along with free-falling education, health care services (scary stuff), and the judicial system is wasted. The many stories of police complicity in violent crimes just highlights how corrupt our society has become.
However, I must agree that we should tell our loved ones more often that we love and care for them. It will go some way to restoring family unity, and by extention, national unity.

Just visiting from SA and picked up your page when I checked my server in SA for the cricket scores.
I went through your email and find the comments on South Africa very naeve even from the former journalist. Whites no longer constitute any factor in SA. Those who left as a result of crime and those who are unaffected by crime still living in SA should
realise that crime will or has affected 80% of the population annualy. It is not a case of if you will be a victim of crime but when. There was with the swearing in of the new democracy great hope and optimism which has turned to depression by the seemi
g lip service paid by the majority party to the rights of the individual to live free of crime. The majority of the country now have as much choice in rulers as the white population had under the Nationalists. The reality is that the only thing that cha
ged about the politicians( with a few exceptions) running SA is the colour of their skins. The current government came to power on lavish promises, the only thing they did not promise to do was reduce crime and violence and the majority accepted this be
ause they had always lived with the kind of crime that there is. Whites who remain are only experiencing the kind of crime that the majority of the population have experienced for many years.
There would appear to be beneath the benign exterior of the ANC a deeply seated anti white- feeling. I have gained the impression over the last months that it would be preferred that all whites leave the country so that the majority can build the country
and prove to the rest of the world that Blacks can build a country without white assistance.
I would suggest that all those lobbying for something to be done about crime rather lobby their own governments to get the whites out. (Maybe I am being paranoic). Thabo Mbeki is called an Africanist. The definition of Africanist in my understanding im

As an ex Capetonian I left RSA about fifteen years ago, having worked in education on the Cape Flats in my previous life and I KNOW about crime. Sadly Whites have now become victims of crime so it HAS to be a newspaper man's dream.
