Canada's First Nation Peoples are as diverse and varied as there are nations in the world. There are 608 First Nations Communities in Canada, and this does not include Off-Reserve People or Nations struggling still (in this modern day) for recognition. British Columbia has the largest population of First Nations People, Ontario the next largest and Prince Edward Island has the fewest.These historically autonomous Nations are struggling to heal their people from centuries of marginalization, prejudice, assimilation, violence and decimation (an endeavor in itself), while they fight the Canadian Government (at all levels) for their right to once again establish their own self-governing bodies and reaffirm rights to the land they have always owned. As this report shows: Canada's high ranking on the United Nations' human development scale would dramatically drop if the country were judged solely on the economic and social well-being of its First Nations people.
