I have decided to dedicate a page to one of my favorite past times, watching DVD movies. My family has recently moved into an incredible new home in which we have a Home Theater Set up which rivals many Movie Theaters. The Surround Sound of the past has been upgraded to include phenomenal, state of the art technology, a projection viewer and perforated screen and a component set up to match. Within this world, I have often lost myself to the thrills of the cinema. With this page I wish to outline some of my favorite movies, both VHS and DVD and tell you my impression of them on certain levels. I welcome criticism and suggestion from all. In any case, I have provided this site as well. For all the information you ever wanted to know about DVD movies, audio and a whole lot of other stuff. Check it out.
I am not only a fan of DVD movies, but also the WideScreen format. This page describes the difference between the movies "formatted to fit your screen" and "widescreen". Please check it out, you'll thank me for it.
Not only do I love DVD movies, but I recently purchased a card that will make all my DVD dreams come true. Blockbuster was offering a 30 DVD's in 30 days card, and I knew I could (and should) do it. So I did. I will review many of the DVD's that I get with this program...but not all.
An obvious first choice as far as I am concerned, for an incredible DVD movie selection. This movie combines all of the sound and picture technology that makes watching movies in the new millennium so intense.
Sound: This movie offers superior Surround Sound quality. Not only are there bullets flying all over the place, but the low end is tested in scenes like 'The Club ("follow the white rabbit") and obviously, the ultimate sound scene, "The Lobby Shooting Spree." I can recommend turning the volume up on this until you can hear the shells falling as if they were pins dropping onto an aluminum floor...crisp. Another under-rated scene for sound is a quickie, "Guns"...check it out.
Picture: This movie has a dark quality to is which demands a dark viewing area. I recommend watching this movie late-night. One of the most incredible shots of the movie, which Mr. S. McCue brough to my attention, is just before Neo meets Morpheus. The shot is straight down, with the flow of the rain, on the entorage exiting the car and entering the building. This movie has it all, fast action fight scenes such as the Morpheus and Neo sparing scenes. There are also the slow motion exibitions like Trinity's slaughter in the Apartment Building or the match-up of Agent Smith and Neo in the subway.
All Around: All Around this movie gets an A from me. I don't know why I won't give it an A+ except that I always wanted the elevator door to really blast me in the face, but it never does.
enjoy
The first movie I rented on DVD from Blockbuster was The Cell. Basically in this movie Jennifer Lopez runs through the mind of a psycho.
Sound:This movie offers a lot of depth in terms of Sound. Because of the new techniques in movies (see Three Kings) the cuts in this movie offer a great sound. Several of the movie highlights for sound include entry into the psycho's mind and basically any time they are inside a mind.
Picture:Again, the new style of films makes The Cell a great new movie. Any time that you enter a mind, expect something not only intense, but surreal, bright, dark and dazzling.
All Around:This movie is one that I would recommend seeing once, and if you don't get it that time maybe watch it again. This movie enters the new wave of film and translates well to DVD. Watch in a dark room on a large screen, full surround is NOT optional.
If you're looking for an edge of your seat movie with big sound and some intense camera shots, this movie is a good one to choose, but not GREAT.
Sound:This movie offers one sound that will rock your room, the Ocean. As an already powerful force in the audible world, harnessing this noise and unleashing it inside your house might not be the best idea for the weak at heart. Other than waves, there's nothing super, some lightening and storm action.
Picture:Equally as beautiful as the sound of the ocean is its picture. The Perfect Storm offers camera angles, action shots and beautiful pictures. Durring the storm some of the shots are phenomenal and will have you on the edge of your seat.
All Around:All around I am not a HUGE fan of this movie, but you should see it. The sound is big and several of the shots are breath-taking. But overall I would probably not recommend buying a movie like this, unless you like it yourself obviously.
I was just brutalized by a movie that I am sure most everyone has seen. It was my first time and I was absolutely RAVAGED by Saving Private Ryan.
Sound:If you want to be in the middle of some of the most gruesome stomach wrenching war ever, sit yourself between five speakers and one sub of this movie. Storming the beach was more intense than I care to admit. You can feel every bomb blast and sense the bullets wizzing by.
Picture:The filming technique in this movie is absolutely incredible. If I recall correctly, people who have experienced warfare of this type applaud the cinematic style of fast paced to slow motion, truly how one must react on the battlefield.
All Around:This movie absolutely assulted my senses. I don't know if I'll ever be able to handle watching it again. But I'd live for the feeling storming the beach in the 'safety' of my La-Z-Boy.
It was only a matter of time before I was given the opportunity to view this Video Disc. And I have to say that it was well worth it. The Dave Matthews Band DVD "Listener Supported" is incredible.
Sound:Welcome to a Dave Matthews concert in your own living room. I am privileged enough to have an incredible sound system to hear this disc on, and for anyone else with big speakers and a souped up amp, throw this one in. The songs are crisp and clear and these boys are pumped up.
Picture:Perhaps one of the biggest benifits of this disc is the ability to see the concert up close and personal, sometimes really close. DVD picture quality blows my mind and on a large screen you've never been to a better show. Multi angle features on three of the songs helps you get a feel for Dave's guitar playing (unreal) and the rest of the band's particular skills.
All Around:This band is GOOD. I was under the impression that Dave was a joke and his band made him good. Well his fingering is out of this world and he certainly holds his own in a band full of extremely tallented musicians. My highlights are watching Carter Beauford on drums. Buy this disc.
