Klaus Schulze
.
There are German elektronik composers, and
then there is Klaus Schulze. He is a genre in and as of himself.
He is avant-garde, he is experimental, he is sometimes somewhat melodic.
His theories, when not avant-garde, seem to be more along the lines of
Trance or Ambient than with those theories associated with Melodies.
Finding a groove and letting it speak for itself is more important to Mr.
Schulze, it seems, than is establishing a rhythm and then adding a melody
over it. In "Time Actor", he allows his musik to groove on and on
and on, while a narrator speaks or makes sounds (in place of a melody,
apparently). You have already read of this album on the musik page.

Richard Wahnfried "Miditation"
Rating:
10 out of 10
Arthur Brown, who appeared on "Time
Actor", is gone and Steve Jollife is brought in. This album sounds
very improvised, fairly experimental. The first track ("Miditation")
lasts 25 minutes and consists primarily of a synthesizer and a flute.
About half way thru the song a beat is established and the flute is allowed
to float about, accented by the synthesizer, in an almost structured format.
The truth is, of course, that there is no firm structure to the piece;
it is without a melody, it is just sound and musik. The second and
final track ("Midiaction") lasts a half hour and is classick Schulze.
There are long phrases defined by high synth strings, a pulsating beat
below that, and synthesized accents in place of melodies. Truly a
great album. You may be able to find it on liquidation sale @ damusic...but
U must hurry because the label that this CD is on will no longer have a
US distributor after damusic drops them! You may also try writing
to "IC/Triple Music - Direct Mail Service/Werftstr. 23, D-6800 MANNHEIM

A review of "Drive Inn,
Vol 1", which was co-written by Klaus Schulze, shall be reviewed next.
And maybe, as an added bonus, I will include a review of his "Software"
work...
