How We Spent our Christmas Vacation

Labna

Labna is best reached by rental car from Cancun or Merida, or by special tour. Located in the Puuc Hills region near Uxmal, it is one of several ceremonial centers in this area. Along with Kabah and Sayil, Labna makes the extra work of finding and exploring these sites very exciting, Labna happens to be my favorite. The large courtyards fronting the well-sited major structures along with the careful detail show the Mayan's masterful architectural ability. This site is a joy to spend some time in.

Chac Mask Cornice Detail at the Labna Palace

An excellant example of a double Chac mask or rain-god mask on the cornice of the Labna Palace. Debra is entering a vaulted passageway from the entrance courtyard and can hardly believe her eyes.

The Labna Vault

Debra is walking past the lavishly decorated western face of the Vault at Labna into the western courtyard. The vault is a passageway from one courtyard to another. The incredible mosaic-stone design and the skillful proportioning make the Labna Vault the finest known example of Mayan portal arches.
