TITLES "Do Whatever He Tells You"
Searching for Love
Frequently, I find it facinating to ponder the many points of wisdom that are contained in
the bible. Some stories and quotes from the many biblical figures find their way deep into the
recesses of the human mind leaving it to sort through what it means to each individual. I have
heard various interpretations from a single saying of Jesus, none of them wrong or better than the
other, but none the less each full of power and wisdom. This is the beauty in the teachings of
God. How many of us can make a single statement that will intel a multitude of meanigs with
such profound power and wisdom, each different, yet all related in a basic ideal.
The power of God flows through each and every one of us, but in a different range of
degrees. However, it is not God that controls this intensity which is infinate, it is the free will that
was given us that allows God's love to flow into our souls. Jesus has knocked on the door of our
hearts and it is up to us to open it to him. God waits with eternal patience to give us His mercy
and forgiveness and does not rest in his ways of love for us. How we long in this worldly life for
someone to touch us in this way, but we fail to find it externally. We must look within ourselves
for God's power. As Jesus said, that it is not what that enters the body that makes it unclean, but
what comes from within. In the same respect I have found the meaning that that the love and
goodness of God also comes from within.
God has given us options to choose from in this earthy life. He has laid commandments
before us, which is to say he commands us to follow his way. But it is not a command given by a
dictator or tyrant, it is from a father to his child. How many of us give our chilgren commands on
how to live and act among people, that our given with a foundation of love. And so is it with
God. He wants nothing more than our undivded love. This is not much to ask from One who
gives us our lives, and families, and pleasures that he guides us to. Realize that even the breaths
that we take are known to Him, and from Him. So as we go on with this search for happiness in
our lives, let us not always look at the remnents of love that grow around us , but to also go to
the source of this love, and that is to God himself.
"Do Whatever He Tells You"
Have you ever thought of the many things taught in the Bible and found something that touched
your heart each time you read it? I'm sure their are many of us that has his or her favorite verse
that stays in our mind just a little longer than the others. Of couse each word from the mouth of
God is as important as any other, yet some seem to hold a special power in it's meaning.
"Do whatever He tells you," is one that is quite a simple statement, yet contains a depth
that is endless. How many times have you heard someone say, "Do whatever he tells you?"
You may have heard it from a supervisor where you work, or from a parent to a child. A child
may approach his or her mother with the statement, "I don't want to clean my room, but dad says
I have to." Then the mother might say, "Do whatever he tells you."
There also may be situations that whatever someone tells you to do, may not be the right
thing. And that is where we must dicern on the proper action. But when this statement comes
from Jesus, it puts a whole other light upon it.
No doubt I am speaking of the wedding at Cana. As the author of the Gospel tells us the
story of a simple wedding with what may be a normal problem(running out of a refreshment), Our
Blessed mother is given the opportunity to make a very powerful statement, "Do whatever He
tells you." When she said this, she directed it to the waiters on what Jesus would say to them, but
through this, what is God trying to tell us? The answer is simple, do whatever Jesus tells us. This
to me, is a promise from God in the perfection of His Word and His Son. It is a guarantee that
whatever Jesus tells us will be just and rightoeus. Isn't it profound that this happens at a time
when Jesus says, "My hour has not yet come." This happened at a time that says to me, "Jesus is
about to teach us, so, do whatever He tells you."
This statement from Mary is one that is no parable or story, it simply rings out as truth.
"Do whatever He tells you," burns in my heart and in my soul with a special power. I find
comfort in the fact that whatever Jesus tells me to do I do not have to question. I do not have to
wander whether its is the right or wrong thing to do, but only pray that I have the courage to act
upon it. "Do whatever He tells you," is a beautiful reminder that the Son of God is always with us
and perfectin in the sight of God.
Do not forget that the next time you are in a situation questioning the next step you are to
take, that if you, "Do whatever He tells you," you cannot go wrong.
And so this brings me to another lesson that I have learned from the wedding at Cana,
Why was Jesus reluctant to help out the situation of the wine running out at the wedding and
what was it that His mother did to persuade Jesus to perform the miricle of changing the water
into wine? Well to answer the second question first I never felt tha t Mary acually persuaded
Jesus to help, but was a lesson that Jesus would listen to his mother concerning the petions of
others. I realize that this is a stricly Catholic belief, but there seems to be a strong message of this
in the wedding at Cana. Mary also seemed to say that I have petioned my Son to help but you
must do whatever he tells you. No one thoughout Jesus' ministry had such an effect on His
actions as Mary did at the wedding at Cana. By the depth of her faith, She trusted that through
Her Son anything is possible. Many people had long to see a miricle from Jesus for their own
selfish benefit, but their lack of faith left them empty. But in this story, Mary teaches us that
though faith, ANYTHING is possible. Mary also teaches us that she can petion Jesus with our
needs, but also that deep faith in trusting what He tells us, out of love and honor for Him, lies the
answer. It is in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit in which we should put
our full trust and the faith Mary our Mother is the model for us to follow.
