Awake At Midnight

My troubled mind in midnight's lonely hour
Travels the world and keeps me from sleep.
I spend the night in chambers dark and gloomy;
I search for ghosts that I don't care to see.

It journeys far, not asking permission,
No heed it takes of my soft, plaintive plea--
A captive to my inner soul's transgression,
I pray for peace, and with it blessed sleep.

My restless mind, it studies me intently
Then softly says in voiceless sympathy,
"There's time to sleep when life is dying embers,
Come! Fly with me, we've still the world to see!"
