Brachypelma vagans - Mexican redrump

Ghede

This is another docile, fast-growing tarantula that doesn't need a lot of upkeep. When he was younger he burrowed all the time. I transferred him to a new terrarium with a ton of substrate for him to use, but he decided to quit burrowing. Typical.

I've lost a few tarantulas over the years to escapes since they tend to be escape artists, but none are more persistent than Ghede. He has escaped no fewer than 6 times. Fortunately, he's better at escaping than hiding. I've always managed to catch him eventually.

In September, 2001, he matured into an adult male. I didn't think he'd be alive much longer, but he survived another 17 months. He was one of the first tarantulas I raised from a spiderling.
